I'd definitely get a road bike in that case. If its all street use you could get a mountain bike but if your work is 45 minutes away a road bike will have less rolling resistance then a mountain bike. A commuter will probably be best for you if you don't want a full on race road bike. If your in a big city craigslist might be good. Probably the biggest thing to look for when you get a bike is the size, make sure you get a bike that fits you. See people all the time riding a wrong sized frame which leads to an uncomfortable ride if your too stretched out on the bars or its too small. Could lead to knee damage if the seat is too low and if its too high you'll develop cramps a lot sooner then if the bike were the proper size. A lot of people are fixated on what brand to buy before anything but sizing is the biggest thing.
If you have a bike shop you can go to near you i'd talk to them a bit and you can get a rough idea of what sized frame you'll need. Even if you don't buy from them and go the craigslist route at least you'll know what to look for as far as sizing and probably what kind of bike you wanna go with. Its an addicting sport, at least for me it is. Gets expensive too. Good luck.
