canceling data plan

i used to think that it was bs that you have to have the data plan.

it IS a smartphone tho.

yo I have the same problem. I got a BB Curve 8900 on AT&T and they MADE me get a data plan. My dad yells at me every time the bill comes if I don't pay him lol.

But uh seriously, is there a way around this. I know there are some AT&T workers on NT. I don't even use it now that I passed Spanish II. no more checkin Google translate on my phone for every question lol.

Some false info being spread in here. There's really only two ways AT&T will only allow you to have any smartphone without a data plan. One is if you have been using the smartphone since before October/November '09. They allowed smart phones without data plans before then so some people were grandfathered in. Option two is to put your sim into a "dumb" phone and call AT&T to have data completely blocked. That means no picture messaging, no visual voicemail, and no data of any kind is accessible through the phone. Once that is done, you can put the sim card into a smart phone and might be able to use it without a data plan. Option two doesn't work for everyone for whatever reason though.

cell phone companies only force you to get the data plan if you are getting discount in purchasing the device.
with that said i think your best bet is to get a phone at full or close to retail price from ebay or craigslist.
Full price blackberry is $500. while this is a big purchase you save money in the ling run if you have zero need for data.
Subsidized smartphone is $200 Plus $720 ($30 data for 24 months)

the cell phone companies aren't evil. They give you a $300 discount on a smartphone. With $30 data it will take them 10 months to make money back. They only see money starting your 11th bill.

If its cdma yer skrewed tho

Its time for me to upgrade my phone with att and I have experienced the same bs as to why we are forced to get a data plan when you purchase a smartphone. Im a college kid who spends a lot of time on campus and we have free wifi so there is really no need for me to have to pay att an extra 20 or 25 a month just so I can access the web through them.

maybe buy or get a free phone that doesnt require a data plan. then purchase the phone you want on ebay, craigslist etc and just switch the number/sim. you will probably end up paying more for the phone though

I purchased an iphone 3g like 2 years ago off a friend. At the time i had it unlocked and jailbroken and turned off 3g so i never had to pay for the data plan because i had wifi at home, school and work. So there really was no point in having it.

Later on (like 1 year), Att caught on somehow and put the extra data plan on my bill. I had to sell my iphone. But now i got the iphone 4 and paying the 15 a month for data plan.
