This sort of thing illustrates why veganism made so much more sense to me than vegetarianism.

If you consume anything containing eggs, this is exactly what you're ordering. As a parallel: I know a lot of people who'd never give up dairyproducts, many of whom claim to care a great deal about how cows are treated. They don't eat meat, only purchase organic, etc. They'd like to thinkthere's nothing wrong with caring for a dairy cow the way one might on a family farm and asking only that, in return, she share some of her milk with us. Of course, in order to stimulate lactation dairy cows are forcibly impregnated. Their female calves can become dairy cows, but what do you think happens tothe males? They're generally sold for veal and killed - just like these male chicks.

You have to remember that, in industries that exploit the reproductive systems of other species, roughly half the resulting babies will be male. Even if wecompletely ignore the cruelty endured by the females during their all too brief and painful lives of servitude, it's difficult for any compassionateindividual to justify the deaths of newborn chicks and calves that directly result from the production of so-called vegetarian products like eggs, cheese, andmilk.

Aww the things mankind does to other animals is astonishing but its a necessary evil to feed this overpopulated planet.

Let's talk about overpopulation and resource scarcity for a moment. There's little more inefficient than feeding another creature tentimes the energy you'll ultimately get out of it as food. We waste an immense amount of water and land rearing livestock simply because people, forwhatever reason, prefer animal protein to plant protein.

According to research conducted by the US NGO Redefining Progress, 1,000 square meters of our planet can produce ONE of the following:
  • 288kg of fruit and veg (9% above the US annual average per-head consumption)
  • 20kg of cheese (35% above US annual average)
  • 178 litres of milk (72% above US annual average)
  • 8kg of beef (average US consumption over 15 weeks)
  • 10kg of local only beef
  • 7kg of fish (US annual average)
  • 125 bottles of imported wine (three times US average)
  • 350 330ml bottles of imported beer
  • 990 pints of locally produced beer
  • 18 medium chickens (1.6kg each)
  • 258 baguettes (made from local wheat)
  • 440kWh of electricity (based on mix of energy with 5% renewables; would cost £65, and is what average American uses in six weeks)
  • A 10-mile round-trip city commute by saloon car every working day for two months OR a round trip, by car, from London to Newcastle.
  • A desktop computer with a 20" screen, keyboard and small deskjet printer, but not the energy to run it.
Think about that. What will feed more people? 10kg of beef, 7kg of fish, 18 chickens, or 288kg of fruit and vegetables? We could end worldhunger and global warming at the same time if everyone adopted a plant-based diet. Now let's talk again about which option is a luxury and which is anecessity.

I thought so too, before I tried it. Travel can be a little tough, but overall it's just like going to the gym - once you get into the habityou're set. Some people have to force themselves to get to the gym. I've always had the opposite problem. I get up-set if I'm forced to skip aworkout. Most athletes I know feel the same way. It's just a matter of acclimating yourself to a positive lifestyle. Once you do, you'll have nodesire to live unhealthy.

If we stopped breeding chickens in factory farms, explain to me how they'd suddenly overpopulate the earth. We'd have MORE resourcesavailable for humans and other forms of life.

I think boca burgers are garbage, too, but there's plenty of good, healthy food out there I happen to find far more appetizing than some ground up flesh, gristle, brain, and fecal matter.

that just made my chicken sandwich from chik-fil-a taste even better
