I teach high school special education and in the last year we've had three teachers walk away. These aren't even new teachers, one had worked for 15 years and walked out in the middle of the day. The other two left at the end of the year. There's a husband and wife team that teach special ed at the high school near mine and they're leaving end of the year. All teachers are pretty fed up.

Are the reasons similar/same or different issues?

They're about the same. Our district has undervalued teachers for years, especially special education teachers. We're over-worked, our caseloads keep getting bigger and all the paperwork and meetings keep growing. There's no support from admin in regards to discipline issues in and out of the classroom.

We just got the email saying that students don't have to stay home if they tested positive. So, a couple teachers brought it up to the union already.

just got back from japan and my wife, my daughter, and i got super sick. we did not wear masks in japan 😫🤦🏻‍♂️

i had to go to the ER for rehydration. I have never been that sick before. tested positive for flu. no covid. looks like i have labyrinthitis as a residual and i have to pretty much lay down all day or else vertigo hits hard along with nausea.

i gotta get serious again about not getting sick. that flu had me questioning my life lol.

side note: my son got that diamond-hard immunity. never got covid while living in the small apartment when we all got it. didn’t get the flu when we’re were all coughing our guts out.

Hopefully it didn’t spoil your trip.

I honestly can’t imagine stopping masking indoors now that I know it keeps me from getting respiratory illnesses. I declined going out to dinner with my fam (who take zero precautions) recently and my dad asked when I was going to stop wearing a mask indoors and I told him it would be the same time I stop wearing a seatbelt in the car.

didn’t spoil it thank goodness. the bad symptoms hit when we got back.

i def need to rethink masking indoors. for sure at work. we have a bunch of covid going around there. i don’t want to get that sick again. that **** was horrible….plus, i ain’t getting younger.

Never got covid until this past September. Wasn't too bad going off some of the stories I heard, lingered for a good 3 weeks tho. Since then been sick twice (not covid), before this I can't remember the last time I was sick, probably a good 5 years at least. Recently got a cold? Maybe, idk what it is, lots of phlegm and a cough, no fever. Been lingering for 3 weeks, tryna take care of myself, getting lots of vitamins and rest but just can't shake it fully. Got a 5 hour flight on Saturday, looks like I'm gonna have to be masked up which sounds rough. Lot of various illnesses going around it seems. Would hate to ruin this expensive *** vacation.

Got it again, Thursday seemed normal and felt fine. Woke up, ran a little, hit the weights, took a shower and went to work. Thursday night had a hangover headache but I didn’t even drink. Ran a fever but was super cold and sweaty. Then violently vomiting, couldn’t keep anything down at all, not water, ginger ale, nothing. All of Friday was a wash. Stuff started clearing up, felt slightly better ate some chicken noodle soup, felt a little better hit the gym, for a whopping 35 minutes, I was so out of breath. Chest pain had me slumped. I don’t think I can do this again. I’m not as young as I was the first time I caught it, major salute to the older demographic that catch it and keep it pushing, I was and slightly still am wrecked.

Going back to working out that soon after being that sick is wild.

Last time I had COVID I did an 11 mile hike during a heatwave because I didn't know I was positive. At the time I just had a scratchy throat, post-nasal drip, and felt slightly run down. Definitely felt wiped out after the hike.

The next morning I still had the sore throat and runny nose so I swabbed myself and lo and behold. :smh:

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A federal appeals court shot down claims Monday that New Jersey residents’ refusal to wear face masks at school board meetings during the COVID-19 outbreak constituted protected speech under the First Amendment.

The 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling in two related cases stemming from lawsuits against officials in Freehold and Cranford, New Jersey.

The suits revolved around claims that the plaintiffs were retaliated against by school boards because they refused to wear masks during public meetings. In one of the suits, the court sent the case back to a lower court for consideration. In the other, it said the plaintiff failed to show she was retaliated against.

Still, the court found that refusing to wear a mask during a public health emergency didn’t amount to free speech protected by the Constitution.

“A question shadowing suits such as these is whether there is a First Amendment right to refuse to wear a protective mask as required by valid health and safety orders put in place during a recognized public health emergency. Like all courts to address this issue, we conclude there is not,” the court said.

The court added: “Skeptics are free to — and did — voice their opposition through multiple means, but disobeying a masking requirement is not one of them. One could not, for example, refuse to pay taxes to express the belief that ‘taxes are theft.’ Nor could one refuse to wear a motorcycle helmet as a symbolic protest against a state law requiring them.”

Ronald Berutti, an attorney for the appellants, said they intend to petition the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case.

The lawsuits were filed by George Falcone and Gwyneth Murray-Nolan.

Falcone attended a Freehold Township school board meeting in early 2022 when masks were still required. He refused, according to the court’s ruling, and was issued a summons on a trespassing charge. He also alleged a later school board meeting was canceled in retaliation for his not wearing a mask. A lower court found he didn’t have standing to bring the suit, and he appealed.

Murray-Nolan, who had testified before lawmakers on her skepticism toward the efficacy of masking, attended an early 2022 Cranford school board meeting without a mask despite a requirement for them. Less than a month later at the board’s next meeting, she was arrested on a defiant trespass charge after attending without a mask. A lower court found officers had probable cause to arrest her because she failed to wear a mask as required under the law at the time. She appealed.

Eric Harrison, an attorney for the officials named in the suit, lauded the ruling on Tuesday. In an emailed statement he said that refusing to wear a mask in violation of a public health mandate “is not the sort of ‘civil disobedience’ that the drafters of the First Amendment had in mind as protected speech.”

New Jersey’s statewide order for public masking in schools ended in March 2022, shortly after the incidents described in the suits.
