Took the Cloud+ Beta last August. Found out today I passed by a nook and crannie. Not mad.

Need to get back on the grind and knock out the PMP, CCNA Cyber Ops and renew my CCNP.

Will having the A+ and CCNA almost guarantee a job if you have 6 months of help desk experience? I’m thinking about going for the CCNA

It won't guarantee but it will be extremely helpful with getting a job.

Might want to try Net + first before CCNA so you're more familiar with networking prior to just diving straight into it with CCNA.
 
Starting salary in NYC for someone with a sec+ cert and no experience?
You will probably get shafted salary-wise with no experience. Plus, if you have no experience it's gonna be difficult to land a job with no experience. I saw someone with Net+, Sec+, and CCNA without experience have a difficult time finding a job.

If you have a homie in IT at your job then I'd ask them if they can go over what they do. They might be the way in.

Certs no longer guarantee you a job in IT. The best guarantee is expanding that experience you have. If you're currently on the desk, ask other teams if you can work on different projects with them. That experience will be key to allow you to move around in IT.

the job landscape is very bad imo

even in security, I was interviewing with an HR person for a screening for a cyber security analyst.

currently im an information security analyst.

she asked me how i will bridge the gap going from information security to cyber security
:rofl:

bruh this lady is responsible for screening candidates and asks people these silly questions lmao

and there are plenty more who are clueless abnout security in the same position

WTF kind of question is that and who told her that was even okay to ask.

IT is booming, but the people hiring for these positions not so much. In my years of working in IT I've come across 3 good recruiters. The rest have no clue. They contact you for a job, take your resume, submit it, and then you never hear from them again.

man the poor soul was probably thrown intot he role she knew nothing.

i would expect her to do some googles

I'm in LA and had a recruiter contact me telling me he has a perfect opportunity for me paying 70k where I am the only security guy in the company

I am currently 1 of 2 security personnel at my company so i know being the only 1 will have a plethora of BS

so i told the dude sorry but for 70k that job is not worth it. he told me i'll talk to them and get back to you.

He gets back to me and says okay they are willing to do 90-105k and im like ok les gett it.

i interview with the manager/director of IT who would be my direct boss, i turn the 1hour interview into a 2 hour conversation and we hit it off.
then i interview with the VP next and we cool.

I hear back weeks later that they decided to go with an internal candidate :lol:

I am guessing they didn't wanna pay someone new coming in and give the internal guy a slight raise and new position.

but yeah the company wanted someone with a cissp and 5 years and was starting pay at 70k :rofl:
 
Used to hate that when I was interviewing for IT Lead/ manager roles, 8 times out of 10 the role was already for someone internal.

That's as bad as these help desk roles around here in the DMV only paying 55k but you want TS clearance, certs and experience.

Once I finally get that sec +, I'm whoring my resume out everywhere

Yeah the landscape is horrible at the moment. Some of these job postings are just to show face. They are sometimes set up for internal postings or for the hiring manager's friend to apply from the "outside" and they pretend it's a fair job listing. When I just got into the field and would go on interviews I would sit and wonder about my performance in the interview, but then you realize that in more cases than you would think, it's not about what you know, it's about who you know.

I wish this help desk role I was in was paying me 55k. 35k and it’s help desk tacked along with a few sys admin responsibilities as well. I just wanted to get my foot IJsselmeer but I’m out after about a year here.

Wowsers!!

Maybe that makes sense for my situation I had about 2 months ago. A recruiter hits me up about a position. They put me through about 3/4 Zoom calls with the company. Then I had to go in to the office and meet with about 4 more people plus talk to some of the people I had already talked to on the zoom call. Go through all of that and thought I did pretty well only to be told that they went in a different direction. Crazy *** industry!!

I don't blame you. I'm slowly, but surely learning that the only real way to grow your pay in IT is to move around every couple of years. The 3% annual raises don't do much.

Until I get to where I’m happy with my position or the money is good, I’ll be moving up every 1.5-2 years. I’m not gonna be the person working at a company for 10+ years hoping for a raise .

I’m trying to go back to school this year and deciding between nursing or something IT related
I’m just so bad at math I’m shook about anything regarding IT :blush: I top out around algebra :lol:

I’m in Boston so there’s plenty of opportunities for both fields

I'm in school now for Respiratory Therapy.
 
What kind of role? First IT job out of college for me was just under 40k...granted that was 7 years ago. I had a degree, security +, network+ and some internship experience.
Fam I was in college when I got into IT I was making 8 damn dollars. Non appropriated funds so I couldn't even get overtime or nothing. I had no degree or cert, (they ended up getting me my Sec+ through a bootcamp when the Government decided everyone with Admin rights needed to have it to touch systems) and there was an audio visual component as well.

kingfoamnyc kingfoamnyc come to OKC with your boy. Me, you, storm (eventually), A-friend. There's at least 4 black guys down here (but in all seriousness, it's way more diverse in that regard than you think) .

Echo what everyone else said, start at help desk, learn your different softwares at that level (Active Directory, SCCM, Remote Desktop (Dameware if you have it), Remedy, and ServiceNow) and whatever, you'll get tickets fro the same folks over and over and sometimes they are from a different department/division and will remember you when they have an opening and hit you up. Your next job will probably still be help desk, but more tier 2 so you're not on phones and dealing with nonsense but probably tickets the help desk themselves escallated.

From there it's kind of up to you or in my case, the job market. If there's a server sys admin, you can tailor your resume to that, if it's a VMware specialist/admin hopefully you've touched it enough you can mention it on your resume and answer a few questions if asked (of course study)

Get your resume on ClearanceJobs, USAJOBs, Indeed, Linkedin, Moster, Ziprecruiter even sends me good stuff or I get hit up by headhunters from there. Also we have a place called Teksystems, I'm sure there's a similar place everywhere, that will interview you to figure out your role/salary goals and take your resume and they'll shop your resume for you. I work exclusively in the cleared Government space so they weren't as much help to me but they still had tons of good stuff for me, I was just saying no. I don't think I want to go private sector

Until I get to where I’m happy with my position or the money is good, I’ll be moving up every 1.5-2 years. I’m not gonna be the person working at a company for 10+ years hoping for a raise .

As you should, constantly make yourself more desirable with either certs, degrees or learning and demonstrating proficiency in new technologies. If your current company won't attempt to promote or give you a raise then it's definitely time to bounce.
