My dad is absolutely not loaded

. His condo is on the Pudong side of Shanghai (the newer side.) Relatively inexpensive to live a middle-class lifestyle.

Part 4: Hong Kong / Macau

After Shanghai, I flew to Hong Kong with my best friend and we spent a week basically eating 5 meals a day, hitting up bars, shopping, and sightseeing. Hong Kong is one of my absolute favorite cities in the world; right up there with San Francisco, New York City, and Paris.  My mom is a travel agent and got us an incredible deal where we got to stay at the Langham Place hotel in Mongkok. I split a room there with my buddy and we ended up paying about $50 a night per person. It was either that or pay $40 a person to stay at the Holiday Inn. We opted for the luxury hotel.

I don't have any pictures of my own of the Langham Place hotel but here's their website. I really recommend it. It's right in the heart of Mongkok which is on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. For the Niketalkers who might care, it's literally two streets away from the famous sneaker street of Hong Kong and a street away from the electronics street. The hotel is also attached to a HUGE mall with a movie theater, restaurants shops, and subway station right underneath. The hotel itself has a swimming pool/spa on the roof with an incredible view of the city. Waking up and doing a couple laps with a view of the entire city is something I'll never forget.

Iconic red taxis of Hong Kong. Between these and the MTR (underground subway), Hong Kong has easily one of the best public transportation systems in the world.

Inside the mall were more sculptures. These were INSANE. I thought my eyes were broken or something when I looked at these sculptures but they were just made with a crazy perspective change. Props to whoever knows what movie this sculpture is from.

You've probably heard of this restaurant before. This is the Hong Kong branch of the infamous Taiwanese restaurant Modern Toilet (where the restaurant is completely bathroom themed.) Food came in urinals and toilet bowls. Honestly, the food was pretty boring but we had to try it.

This place was cool. This restaurant, Tim Ho-Wan, is the world's most inexpensive Michelin-starred restaurant. My buddy and I woke up at like eight in the morning to go wait in line for two hours to get a seat (the restaurant has like 20 seats.) For less than $10USD per person, we were able to gorge on Michelin-starred dim sum

For my Cantonese, or dim sum enthusiasts, I have a question. Why are the siu mai in Hong Kong so bad? I swear they do it so much better over in the US (I've had it in both the Bay Area and NYC; both do it better than Hong Kong.) Why?

This chain of Japanese steak joints is INCREDIBLE. There's only one in HK and it happened to be in the mall adjacent our hotel. Not much to say other than this was one of the best things I've ever eaten. My buddy and I went here way too many times during our week

One day, my buddy's family friend took us on a trip out to Macau. This was my first time there and I will probably go back many more times. Macau is another special administrative region of China, was once a Portugese territory, and is about an hour away by boat from Hong Kong. Most know it as Asia's Vegas. What most people don't know is that it's an incredibly beautiful city with great food and a culture very distinctively it's own.

No joke, dude, you could do some travel writing/logging. You broke your trip down really well. Props. Never thought I'd ever want to see any of mainland China but you persuaded me otherwise.

Do it man, it's a beautiful place. Go to the rural areas for the natural beauty, Beijing for the cultural sites, and Shanghai for a peak at China's rise on the world stage. Shanghai, right now, is a top ten metropolitan city. I can't even imagine it in twenty years.
