Y'all are weirdos overseas with how y'all associate TN's with "thugs". That's extremely stereotypical and strange to me.
Can't agree with that, in France, it was, and it is still, but not so much, the Air Max associated with riffraff.
A stereotype, but which was true, was to be dressed with a Levi's 501 for example, with a pair of TN's and a leather coat from brands like Redsk++s or Schott.
Here some brands are really associated with riffraff/thugs. Like Lacoste. Sergio Tacchini back in the days.
Even if a thug could dress Adidas, it has not a bad reputation in France nowadays.
You know TN's are associated with thugs when a young man I knew said to me he couldn't wear them because it was too much connotated.
He was a mixed Maghrebian/African and from the hood. And he didn't seem to want to be locked as a guy from the hood.
Maybe reason why, plus the luxury as itself, some dudes from the hood are about Versace sometimes and this kind of brands while some dudes from middle class are not so much about spending so many bills on luxury clothes/shoes...
Of course I don't want to generalize, but sometimes stereotypes are true.

EDIT : I read again your message, and I think I didn't understand it well as first...Anyway ^^
