Tebow denies Wonderlic incident
Posted by Mike Florio on March 24, 2010 6:04 PM ET
So I had a telephone conversation today with quarterback Tim Tebow.

Ever heard of him?

He reached out, via agent Jimmy Sexton, in response to Tuesday night's story regarding the incident during the Wonderlic testing at the Scouting Combine.  As a league source told us, Tebow said something in the testing room about saying a prayer.  And then another player said something in response.  And then some of the other players laughed.

But Tebow says it didn't happen.

"Not one single word of it is true," Tebow told me.

Tebow has a very genuine and disarming way about him.  There's a innocence and kindness in his voice that conflicts with the image of a highly successful college quarterback, who was arguably one of the best college football players of all time.

He was nevertheless firm and resolute in his denial.

"One of the number one things for me is being someone of character and when I say something people can take it to the bank," Tebow said.  "That story is absolutely not true."

Tebow then named several of the other players who were in the room, and he invited me to check his version with each of them.

Tebow explained that he said nothing to the group of roughly 100 players, and he said that he spoke only to BYU quarterback Max Hall.

After talking to Tebow, I immediately contacted the source for the story, who agreed with my assessment that Tebow is "the real deal."  But the source didn't back down.

It's possible that Tebow made a comment intended for Hall that was overheard by another player, who then made a profane comment in response that was not heard by Tebow.  Still, Sexton told me in a follow-up e-mail that Tebow "never said anything remotely close" to what had been attributed to him.

We'll keep digging on this one.  We're confident that our source didn't make it up, but we were impressed by Tebow's willingness to reach out and explain his position.  Though I'm usually even more skeptical when someone tells me multiple times in a seven-minute conversation that he always tells the truth, when Tebow said it I believed it.

That said, there has to be a way to harmonize the two stories.  Tebow believes he's telling the truth, and I believe our source.  We'll keep after this one and report back when we have more.

Tebow made a request that the players bow their heads in prayer before taking the 50-question exam.
Said one of the other players in response:  "Shut the f--k up."
Others players in the room then laughed.

Tebow is a cool dude. I think dudes gon underestimate him in the locker room. If we hear about him supersockin somebody don't be shocked.

But we'll see. Hope He keeps His head up and starts one day.

They will. A month from now or so there's still an opportunity to tinker and change things they see fit with the rule. I expect to see it flow into the regular season at that point since there's already some criticism arriving only a day after the rule was implemented.
Source: No interest in McNabb deal
By R.B. FALLSTROM, AP Sports Writer

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Reports that the St. Louis Rams are trying to acquire Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb(notes) are untrue, according to a person familiar with the team’s plans.

Media outlets in Philadelphia on Wednesday reported the Rams had offered a second-round draft pick and safety Oshiomoghe Atogwe for McNabb. The source told The AP that the reports were unfounded.

Atogwe is coming off shoulder surgery and ended the season on injured reserve, and would have to sign a tender offer before the Rams could trade him. He had made 60 consecutive starts and was the team’s second-leading tackler before getting hurt in early December.

The Rams have interest in taking Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford with the first pick of the draft after going 1-15 with Marc Bulger(notes), the starter since 2003, and backup Kyle Boller(notes). A.J. Feeley(notes) signed earlier this month and is the likely backup next season.

Rams general manager Billy Devaney had not returned a telephone message from The AP.

McNabb’s name has surfaced in trade rumors because the Eagles have Kevin Kolb(notes) and Michael Vick(notes) on the roster. McNabb is entering the final season of his contract and the team could be considering making a change because they haven’t won a Super Bowl with him. McNabb has led Philadelphia to five NFC championship games in 11 seasons, winning one NFC title.

Eagles coach Andy Reid has maintained throughout the offseason that McNabb will return. But rumors began swirling Wednesday after Reid said he’s listening to offers for all of his quarterbacks.

“I wouldn’t say they’re on the market,

come onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn raiders.. offer that 1st round pick

but seriously.. the cards and panthers make the most sense (both older teams, that need to have success now).. i would have said the broncos too, but they already acquired a QB and  want to get rid of marshall
Mel Kiper's latest 2010 Big Board
Last week I introduced four new names to the Big Board. This week it's about movement, not about new additions. You will see some changes once some of the more important pro day workouts are finished. Also, we have a new mock draft (McShay) coming next week, with a new one from me to follow a week later. Here lives the latest (dual) mock draft we've posted.

As for the Board, you'll see jumps from a couple of wide receivers in a class that's been interesting. There's still some mystery surrounding this group. Anyway, here we go. The draft suddenly isn't so far away.

Well, that didn't take long.

Just after we posted that Texans owner Bob McNair
was convinced the Jets would be featured on HBO's Hard Knocks, the New York Daily News has learned the Jets will announce they are on the show Thursday.

Indeed, the Jets have promised a "major announcement" Wednesday that isn't personnel or health related.

We look forward to Rex Ryan setting the all-time record for F bombs in a single season.
Suh, McCoy among eight prospects already confirmed for draft

Sources have confirmed that the following players will be among those in New York a month from today when the 75th NFL draft begins on Thursday, April 22 in primetime at 7:30 p.m. ET:

Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
Russell Okung, T, Oklahoma State
Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
Trent Williams, T, Oklahoma
Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee
Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State

The NFL has also already extended and will extend invitations to other players as part of the celebration of the league's 75th draft. The list of players still mulling their options includes quarterbacks Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow.

Tebow, the most intriguing player in this draft, is still considering a trip to Manhattan, according to his agent, Jimmy Sexton. The league is allowing for greater flexibility than ever before, with players not bound to the green room at certain times, and able to return to their hotels and have privacy. The league realizes some players are borderline picks from one round to another and will work with players to make the experience as enjoyable as possible.

The players will arrive in New York City on Tuesday night of draft week and do a host of charity and sponsor events, including clinics for children and a visit to a children's hospital, before Thursday.

The NFL expects to host more players than ever before on-site in New York, on each of the first two days of the draft. The league will finalize its list of prospects that will be in attendance in the weeks ahead.

The NFL during draft weekend also will be unveiling the top 10 most valuable draft picks of all-time, as selected by the fans -- voting is being conducted now on NFL.com. In addition, several members of the upcoming Hall of Fame class will be in attendance during draft festivities.
If this has been approved its big news, the moving of 2 division games to the back end of the schedule. that means no more sitting players in weeks 16 & 17.

kinda funny this gets passed with Polian sitting as the leader on the competition committee
Rams talk contract with Bradford, Suh, McCoy, Clausen
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 25, 2010 3:09 PM ET

The only team that's allowed to begin contract negotiations with draft prospects before the draft is the team that has the first overall pick. The St. Louis Rams are taking advantage of that.

Rams Executive VP of Football Operations Kevin Demoff said he has had discussions with the agents for Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen.

"All the people who are in the discussion [for No. 1 overall], we've talked to their agents," Demoff told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "We're really just comparing notes. Also, it may take some time, so we figured we'd get a head start."

Talking to multiple players could give the Rams some negotiating leverage in attempting to get their top choice to agree to a team-friendly contract before the draft, but Demoff said that's not what these discussions are about.

"It's not a thing about playing them off against one another," Demoff said. "I don't really believe that that works. It's a complicated deal. It's got a lot of moving parts. You're just getting the sense for which parts are important for which people. So if you get down that path . . . you've already done a lot of the legwork."

Even though they're already talking to agents four weeks before the draft, the Rams won't necessarily get a deal done before NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announces their pick, as the Lions did with Matthew Stafford in 2009 and the Dolphins did with Jake Long in 2008.

"The goal is to get the right deal for the right player that you want to draft," Demoff said. "If that happens before the draft, great. If it doesn't happen before the draft, then we'll spend May, June and July working on it."
Report: Raiders in hottest pursuit of McNabb
Posted by Mike Florio on March 25, 2010 3:55 PM ET
For more than two months, the Eagles played it coy regarding the possibility of trading quarterback Donovan McNabb, hoping for an offer they couldn't refuse.

And then when the offer never came, they needed a Plan B.

Plan B has unfolded far more haphazardly, with coach Andy Reid publicly acknowledging that offers have been made for McNabb and then smoldering rumors of a trade to the Rams becoming a report from Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer that the trade could happened by the end of the week, if not by the end of the day.

(The Rams strongly denied the report, and McLane has since backed off dramatically.  But the damage may already have been done.  We're hearing that McLane had been hoping to become the new Eagles beat writer for the Inquirer, replacing Bob Brookover, who now covers the Phillies.  We're also hearing that the swing and the miss on the McNabb-to-Rams story may have kept that from happening.)

So if the Rams aren't doing a deal, which team will?  Jason La Canfora of NFL.com reports that the Raiders are "in heaviest pursuit."  Other possibilities are the Bills and Cardinals.  (However, one media source with whom we spoke is convinced that Buffalo owner Ralph Wilson would never pay McNabb an eight-figure salary.)

Even though McNabb reportedly prefers Arizona to Buffalo or Oakland, the Raiders have shown that they're not afraid to trade for a reluctant player with only one year left on his contract.  They did it last year with defensive end Richard Seymour, who now carries the exclusive level of the franchise tag.

So stay tuned.  As explained in the latest edition of PFT Daily, we now think it's just a matter of time before the Eagles move McNabb.
