[h2]SPRING NOTES: Bochy clarifies plans for Bumgarner and Posey, Frandsen gets a new number[/h2]

Ourfirst session of the spring with Bruce Bochy didn’t have many dramaticmoments, but the skipper clarified a couple matters that involve theGiants’ two brightest prospects.

The way it’s been characterized by just about everyone, including GMBrian Sabean, is that the No.5 starter job is Madison Bumgarner’s tolose. But Bochy spoke like it’s actually the 20-year-old’s job to win.

The difference is scant, I’ll admit. Unless you’re Todd Wellemeyer or a member of his family.

Bochy said the signing of Wellemeyer, a non-roster right-hander whomade more than 50 starts for the Cardinals over the two previous years,turns the No.5 job into more of an open competition. Bochy alsomentioned Kevin Pucetas and Joe Martinez as peripheral candidates.

As for the Giants’ other prospect, Buster Posey, Bochy said hewanted to clarify comments he made earlier this month at FanFest inwhich he said the former Golden Spikes-winning catcher would get somework at other infield positions this spring.

Bochy said Wednesday that he only wants Posey to take some groundersat first base. That way, Posey can provide the organization the optionto give him occasional rests from catching to stay fresh while stillallowing his potentially impactful bat to stay in the lineup every day.

Bochy reiterated that it’s possible Posey could open as the backupto Bengie Molina and catch two times a week. It’s still far morelikely, though, that Posey will begin the season at Triple-A Fresno.

–The first day of camp usually involves a notable uniform numberswitch or two, and this year is no exception. The surprise is thatKevin Frandsen is involved.

Frandsen gave back his No.19 to pitching coach Dave Righetti andreceived No.9 instead. He said he often wore that number, or othersingle digits, throughout youth baseball leagues.

You probably remember that Righetti donated his No.19 a couple yearsago as a tribute to the Frandsen family, with whom he had been closeover the years. They’re both from San Jose and Frandsen’s late brother,D.J., idolized Righetti.

It was, and remains, a heartwarming story. But the last couple yearshave been difficult for Frandsen, who lost a season to a rupturedAchilles’ tendon and rode the Fresno shuttle all last year. He saidit’s time for a fresh start. Hence, the new number.

Frandsen is trying to win a utility job. Unfortunately, for him, he’s got one more minor league option left.

–There will be more in the newspaper coverage, including an in-depthlook at Aaron Rowand’s novel way to prepare for his new role as theGiants’ leadoff hitter. Hint: It would be fitting if he hits for thecycle on opening day.

[h1]'I Can Play Like Edgar Renteria Again'[/h1]
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Giants shortstop Edgar Renteria played all last season with a bone spur in his right elbow, about the size of a piece of pea gravel.

Such a seemingly minor problem to derail an entire season.

Renteria hit a career-low .250 with 19 doubles, five home runs and 48 RBIs in 124 games before the Giants turned to hot-hitting Juan Uribeas they fought for a playoff berth down the stretch. It was the fewesthomers for Renteria since 1998 and resulted in a season that he calledsimply "embarrassing."

"I can play like Edgar Renteria again," he said after arriving in the Giants' camp Friday.

Giantsmanager Bruce Bochy had no trouble naming Renteria the startingshortstop this season, so Uribe will continue is his role as a superinfield sub — as he was last season until taking over for Renteria thefinal three weeks.

"You look at what Edgar has accomplished inhis career," Bochy said. "He certainly deserves a chance to go out andshow what he can do when he is healthy. That's why we signed Edgar,because of his experience and because he is a winner.

"Let himplay. It's easy to judge somebody on a short term basis, but when youhave a guy who has had a distinguished career like Edgar, he deservesthe starting job."

The 33-year-old Renteria signed a two-year, $18.5 million deal in December 2008.

"Ifeel embarrassed last year because I was not doing my thing on thefield. They signed me improve the team," Renteria said. "I feel realshy and embarrassed for the fans and the organization. I'll be readyall year."

Renteria said he felt the injury in the final week ofspring training, and an MRI indicated that surgery was necessary. Heopted to play instead.

"We knew it was going to be like that allyear," Renteria said. "I just had to play like that. I'd do it again,because that's what I live for, playing baseball. I always feel thatnothing can stop me from playing the game."

Renteria said histhrowing was not affected because he could use his shoulder, buthitting was painful. He had trouble extending his right arm, whichlimited his range of motion and the ability to attack an outside pitch.

"Hitting is not easy," Renteria said.

Renteriareceived a second opinion for specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum after theseason, and said Yocum was astounded that Renteria could play with sucha large spur.

"The doctor said he didn't know how I played likethat. I thought it was funny, because I had been playing like that allseason. After the surgery, when they showed me the bone spur, Irealized I was pretty hurt," Renteria said.

"He's excited aboutcoming to camp healthy and having that elbow issue taken care of andswinging the bat with it not causing any pain. He has a different lookabout him," Bochy said.

NOTES: Bochy confirmed that C Buster Posey is a long shot to make the major league team out of spring training as Bengie Molina'sbackup. "He is probably going to be going to (Triple-A) Fresno andcontinue to work on his game. He's at that point where he needs histhree, four at-bats on a consistent basis," Bochy said. The Giants' No.1 draft pick in 2008, Posey hit a combined .325 with 18 homers and 80RBIs at Class-A San Jose and Fresno last season. ... Guillermo Motathrew his first bullpen session Friday after completing a physical. ...INF Kevin Frandsen was among the latest group of position players to arrive early. They begin formal workouts on Tuesday.

Runzler and Medders are locks, most likely. Then a combo of Hinshaw/Joaquin/Wellemyer/Madison?
 
^ that sounds about right I think Bochy said he plans to have 12 or 13 total pitchers on the roster.

Runzler made that big of an impact with his brief stint last season? Wow, I didn't even realize that. I forgot we had Burriss on the team, what is his role going to be?
 

Mark DeRosa. What DeRosa brings is a bit of threatening presence, a guy who's not going to quietly sigh when a Giant kills a rally with boneheaded hitting.

He said "it boils my blood" when a teammate gets careless at the plate or ignores the game situation.

"If it's the late innings and we need a baserunner and (the Giants' hitter) swings at the first pitch and grounds out, that's the time I'll voice my opinion," DeRosa said. "You need to be told, and it's not always the manager (who needs to do the telling). It's been done to me. It's got to be about playing the game the right way and respecting situations."
