Yeah, the s/n looked familiar. It's good to see people on here from other boards. I stay away from the sherdog boards though lol.

To tell you the truth, sherdog isn't as bad as a lot of mmafighting posters make it out to be. They sometimes have some good reads on there. I willadmit though that 90% of their threads and members are a waste of bandwidth!

What I find interesting is how some pro fighters make time to post on there. One I see quite frequently is Joe Lauzon.

The mmafighting/sherdog thing reminds me of the whole NT/ISS fiasco

TEXAS FIGHTER DIES

Sammy Vasquez, 35, Becomes MMA's First Documented Fatality

By Anthony Armstrong

The Harris County Medical Examiner's office confirmed today that Samuel Vasquez, a 35-year-old mixed martial artist from Houston, Texas, died on Friday, Nov. 30. A representative for the Joseph A. Jachimczyk Forensics Center verified the time of death at 8:15 p.m. CST. Vasquez's death appears to be the first documented fatality resulting from a regulated MMA fight.

Vasquez (1-2) suffered a third-round knockout loss to Vince Libardi (4-3) during a Renegades Extreme Fighting bout on Oct. 20 at Houston's Toyota Center. After the fight, Vasquez was taken to Saint Joseph Medical Center's Critical Care Unit, where he began a 47-day struggle.

The official cause of Vasquez's death has not been released, pending a determination from the medical examiner.

During his hospitalization, Vasquez's wife, Sandra, is believed to have documented his status on a public comment board at TXMMA.com. She reportedly wrote that Vasquez underwent surgery to remove a blood clot that was not a result of the initial injury. This has led to speculation that Vasquez may have had a pre-existing condition.

According to the comments posted, Vasquez then suffered a second blood clot, fluid on his brain, brain swelling and a massive stroke that induced a coma.

The Vasquez family has not spoken directly to the press.

According to a report by Sherdog.com, Vasquez had been released to an area hospice on Nov. 29. Hospice care is traditionally provided for patients who have been given six months or less to live.

Paul Erickson, owner of TXMMA.com, photographed the event in which Vasquez was injured.

"There was nothing out of the ordinary," Erickson said. "They scrambled and hit the cage. Sammy stood up and looked a little wobbly. Then he when down again and the referee called the doctor in. It didn't seem like any was out of the ordinary. Sammy was winded and looked exhausted, but he wasn't unconscious when they carried him out [on a stretcher]. Everyone was puzzled at the time because no one could tell when or where he was injured."

Erickson, who has trained in and covered Texas MMA since 1997, also observed that "the cage was properly padded and reinforced, everything was inspected before the fights started, and there were no illegal moves or strikes. This is the frustrating part, in that there's no easy explanation."

In the sport's 14-year history in the United States, there had been no serious life-threatening injuries. The only reported death occurred internationally at a non-regulated event in the Ukraine in 1998 after American Doug Dedge passed out shortly following his bout. Following his death, unsubstantiated reports claimed Dedge had a pre-existing medical condition.

In a previous interview, Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation representative Greg Alvarez said the TDLR was monitoring Vasquez's condition closely. "If Sammy's condition takes a turn for the worse," Alvarez said, "we will investigate [the incident] further."

Alvarez had also stated that TDLR ensured all of the regulations, licensing and safety checklists were adhered to but had been reluctant to talk about the night Vasquez was critically injured.

Renegades Extreme Fighting is owned and promoted by Saul Soliz, a longtime striking coach to Tito Ortiz and Ricco Rodriguez and well respected figure in the MMA community. Renegades has held 23 events to date. Soliz has not returned repeated calls for comment.

In her last purported TXMMA.com posting on Nov. 17, Vasquez's wife stated, "I do not hold anyone responsible for what has happened, and I know in my heart that Sammy doesn't either ... Please do not speculate as to what, when, where, who or how. It's part of life, things happen."

Vasquez is survived by his wife, Sandra, and 7-year-old son.

Tragic. RIP.

Read about that a couple days back. So heartbreaking.

Let's hope it's the first and only incident we will ever see in MMA.

R.I.P.

Rumor: Big John McCarthy retiring?

Dann Stupp, MMAjunkie.com
December 5, 2007
"Big" John McCarthy, a legendary mixed-martial-arts referee who made his octagon debut at UFC 2, has scheduled a media conference call for Friday to make a big announcement.

MMAjunkie.com has been told by multiple sources that the legendary referee may be announcing his retirement as an MMA referee, though the news could not be confirmed.

McCarthy, who's also been a Los Angeles police officer since 1985, is withholding comment until Friday's announcement.
McCarthy, one of the sport's most respected officials, reffed every UFC main-card bout from March 1994 to May 2001. Once the sport became regulated by state commissions, he reffed fewer fights, but he's always been a go-to guy for some of the biggest bouts in MMA history.

Of the UFC's 100 total events, McCarthy has been a referee in 98 of them.

A longtime student of Rorian Gracie, McCarthy was awarded a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt back in January. He opened his own school -- Big John McCarthy's Ultimate Training Academy (BJMUTA) -- in Valencia, Calif., back in September 2006. Additionally, the LAPD awarded McCarthy Tactic/Self-Defense Instructor Certification, and he's been an instructor for the police department since 1993.

McCarthy, who is known for his trademarked "Let's get it on!" phrase to start each fight, has reffed more than 500 career MMA fights.

Someone said on Sherdog that

FORREST and RAMPAGE

Will be the next TUF coaches

Two of the most hilarious MMA fighters right now are coaching

I think they're good fighters, but as for coaching, I don't see it. Maybe Forrest will do a good job since he's been there and knows what goesinside the house, etc. but Rampage? I think he should be focusing on something else. But who cares, I can't wait for whatever comes out of their mouth

Huerta got SUPER lucky that Guida was on the way down when he hit that knee. Guida was too quick and too technical for Huerta in the first two and he shouldawon that fight if he just laid back a little in the last round.

But a GREAT fight nonetheless. Props to Huerta

damn I knew I shouldn't have come into this post

smh.gif
, oh man am I gonna hear it from all the Roger Huerta lapdogs that I talk to after I kept telling them he hasn't been tested

Props to Roger Huerta, he hung in there . Clay Guida is a BEAST. Its like homeboy dont get tired! Favorite fight was the war machine vs. J-rock. You gonnasee both of them dudes in the UFC. Also, I thought last nights event was better than the last pay-per-view.

That show last night was more entertaining than some PPVs of the last year.

What the card lacked in star power was more than made up for with the quality of the fights.

I can't get over how Mac simply dominated. It was like, "take down, mount, hooks in, and it's a WRAP".

I also think War Machine will be the TUF "loser" that will be first to get picked up. That match was ridiculous.

^ Ya he and J-Rock put on a show! I loved the emotion from him and Huerta in their post fight interviews.

Huerta came out in round 3 completely different I thought than he had in rounds 1 and 2...just kept pushing forward even when he got gassed. I still reallydon't think he'd be able to hang with Sherk or even Penn simply because of Penns insane BJJ and Sherks LnP. I would like to see Huerta and Florianfight so Florian could get shut up. Hopefully Clay rebounds well, Id love to see him and J-lo fight...the LW division is becoming the most stacked division inthe UFC, especially if Diego officially moves down...and who knows maybe Mac will be something to deal with in the LW division.

Anyone know where I can find the fighter payouts from last night's TUF 6 Finale?

I'm assuming War, J-Rock, Roman, and George all get contracts.

Guida lost through his own strength. Huerta knew he'd be doing take downs a lot of times and Guida was determined to do so. I anticipated a knee to the jawand it happened.

Huerta's good in avoiding submissions tho. He scrambles really quick and avoids it.

Thank god there's light in the LW division now. Too much action in the LHW division and we even had a PPV event solely for LHWs.

^ nagh it wasn't...and yes it's crazy how every weight class in the UFC is stacked! Also, This upcoming TUF season is a must, Rampage and Forest ascoaches and the Forest fights Rampage for the belt, Jesus.
