The answer is that they are sold their soul to the gun lobby, and they made it such a strong culture and identity issue for a good chunk of their voters that they have no choice but to roll out silly hypocritical arguments

Ron Desantis wants to turn american in a lawless socitey where criminals have easy access to high powered weaponry to terrorize the populace.
Florida has a high murder rate and Ron Desantis is busy investigating drag queens and DEI departments.
He's a short angry nerd who more interested in universities safe spaces than bringing down murder rates.

I love how as a teenager she so easily mocked his last name and his existence at the same time. You tend to age out of that mastery of casual cruelty but as teens, it comes natural lol. Hopefully this does lead to something Florida politics need anything good at this point.
