I have done a couple of research project involving "food stamps". In short, it is one of the best government programs out there.

It is relatively cheap, low fraud meets it's policy goals and improves people's quality of life. Furthermore, it is a racist dog whistle for "lazy blacks" but you would be surprised how many middle and upper-middle-class college kids use it too, also poor rural whites. It is a massive success story.

While I am big on anti-poverty programs, a lot of liberals lose sight of the fact that we have to not only pull people out of poverty but improve the lives of people that live in poverty. Universal food security should be just as a priority as universal healthcare or free college.

Whites and Asians use food stamps at the grocery store
Hell I’ve seen plenty of whites and Asian pull up in a Mercedes or bmw
And pull out there WIC coupons at the store

One of the most awful situations I see across the country is when young mothers are discouraged socially and/or legally from an abortion, have a child with no help, and then are made to feel like leeches. They deserve help to have the basic essentials for a healthy and happy child, and people shame the **** out of them for it. Meanwhile, wealthy people are out here defrauding the government out of tax revenue and doing real damage to our long-term economic outlook.

This is exactly why cats like bigrockford look so dumb when they come in here with that conservative nonsense. They argue from the position that the worst case scenario is the rule when it comes to the poor and government assistance. And if you’re ignorant Of the facts and data and have racial biases those talking points can make sense. But all of the data shows that assistance does way more for upward socioeconomic mobility than none at all. The reasons why 70% of people born into poverty don’t make it out, has little to do with over-relying on government assistance.

Full time students don’t often have full time jobs. And I would assume if you’re not being claimed as a dependent for any number of reasons, a student can qualify for food stamps based on income.

I get that part. A friend of mine finessed the system in college and lived in section 8 housing.

Couple things:

-First I want to make sure that you understand that I am calling the "lazy blacks" dog whistle nonsense because it is racist bull****. I am just pointing out that conservatives run to that dog whistle to discredit the program that is clearly working well. I am saying that while conservatives frame food stamps as a program that just helps undeserving black folk, that in reality it also helps poor white people, and college students too. Conservatives try to put this negative racial cloud over the program, in reality, most people on the program are white.

-Second, let us be careful. Don't fall for the trap conservatives set. Conservatives also want you to believe fraud is rampant with the program but it is actually very low compared to how big it is. So these "I see people doing this and that" feeds into that talking point. Do some people finesse the system, sure. Do most, hell no. The overwhelming majority of folk use it properly. The anti-SNAP rhetoric is uniquely anti-black but doesn't mean we have to throw other races under the bus to push that against conservatives nonsense.
