He beat the other opponents because the Republican party has been in disarray for a long time. They never looked at what lost them the last presidential election & grow from that. It's not that big of an accomplishment when you look at it empirically. If anything it tells you how bad a shape the Republican party is in because quite frankly trump is a really deeply flawed meat head of a candidate.

Trump has a lot of support for many different reasons, a few are
1. People are tired of the run of the mill politics
2. The white man in America feels threatened because they lost to a black man twice and now are on the brink of losing to a woman. That's 12 years of not having one of their own as Commander In Chief
3. There is still a large amount of ignorance within those who vote
