Balotelli is the reason why I got into EPL back in the day. The way he was treated by Italian fans is the reason why I 1000% refused to get an Italy jersey. It's not right.

An Ugly Reminder: Racism in Hockey

The day after the Washington Capitals downed the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins in overtime, we should have been talking about what a great series it was. Instead, we’ve been forced to focus on the actions of a few severely misguided individuals who felt the need to react with hate-filled comments on the scorer of the game’s winning goal.

Joel Ward scored what could be one of the more important goals in Washington Capitals history, sending his team to the Eastern Conference semifinals, yet faced questions regarding racism directed toward him by some sour fans on Twitter.

When the tweets were amplified by The Huffington Post and other outlets to expose the public show of racism, the outrage was instant from all across the hockey community and beyond. (You can read many of the tweets on Chirpstory, if you have the stomach for it.)

The things that Black athletes had to go through in order to be successful in America, was disgusting. Jackie Robinson, and Joe Louis, tough men. But Louis was done dirty by both managers and amerikkka.

Schmeling's victory gave Gould tremendous leverage, however. If he were to offer Schmeling the title chance instead of Louis, there was a very real possibility that Nazi authorities would never allow Louis a shot at the title.[41] Gould's demands were therefore onerous: Jacobs would have to pay 10% of all future boxing promotion profits (including any future profits from Louis's future bouts) for ten years.[42] Braddock and Gould would eventually receive more than $150,000 from this arrangement.[42] Well before the actual fight, Jacobs and Gould publicly announced that their fighters would fight for the heavyweight title on June 22, 1937.[42] Figuring that the New York State Athletic Commission would not sanction the fight in deference to MSG and Schmeling, Jacobs scheduled the fight for Chicago.[42]

My hope is that there’s less typecasting going forward.

Coaches try to pigeonhole players by their ethnicity instead of having them play to their strengths.

Hope to see more Asians infilitrate the pro ranks as well.

Asia & South Asia has a lot of untapped potential.

I can see cricketers become successful baseball players and China has a wealth of potential basketball talent.

In regard to the NBA, rules of physicality were changed in order to welcome the European player. Many grew up with the physical game, learning how to play within a system that allowed contact. Black players had to learn to protect themselves during the 50's sixties and seventies, because rules were not changed. In fact they were enhanced, no dunking, to protect white players who were thought to be less athletic. White players from those era's would try and hurt the Black player intentionally, possibly ending his career. They wanted to keep the sport white. We saw how that worked out. Dr. J ended all discussion over who was driving the game in what direction. So with the expansion of the NBA during the early 2000's, rules had to be changed in favor of the player who was not used to such physicality. Anthony Mason used to scare Toni Kukoc to death. The NBA then instituted a no taunting rule to protect players like Kukoc.

That said, it is funny as to how typecasting works, and than who it may benefit due to cultural norms.

Where are all the "Athletes are overpaid" complaints over these baseball bags being handed out? Especially when it's the least skill oriented of the four majors.

Because white men can’t be overpaid.

It goes against the foundation of America’s racist/capitalist structure that rewards white male “ingenuity” far beyond any other success.

It’s still above 60% white and there’s nothing else to it.

No caps, agents run amuck, guys get drafted BEFORE graduating high school....shall I continue? Meanwhile restriction after restriction exists on the sports that are dominated by people of colour.

How Dr. J Blackified Pro Ball, Found Himself, And Stayed Eternally Cool

Has any other individual in team sports radically altered the idea of how his particular game should be played to the degree Julius has? Jackie Robinson? Babe Ruth? Jim Brown? A more instructive comparison would be someone like Joe DiMaggio. DiMaggio was impeccable, the nonpareil. He was simply better. Yet there is something hermetic about Joe DiMaggio. He did what everyone else did, but with incomparable excellence. Joe's exemplariness is to be admired, but it doesn't offer a whole program of reform. His greatness is a dead end, specific to Joe and Joe alone. Julius, on the other hand, may not have invented the slam dunk, the finger roll, or the hanging rebound—the entire airborne game in general. But he certainly popularized it, and by doing so he announced that others could follow in his footsteps, even surpass him. Seeing Julius fly to the hoop spread the news: it can be done, so do it. Nine years ago Julius appeared alone in his ability to go pyrotechnic at any time. This past year, however, lined up against a gaggle of his poetic offspring, "human highlight film" youngbloods like Dominique Wilkins and Larry Nance, Julius was content to make his final attempt a running foul-line takeoff: the "classical" dunk, a bit of archaeology demonstrated by the father of the form.

Doc Rivers: It’s Hard Coaching Black Players Without Male Figures
https://www.ebony.com/news/doc-rivers-hard-coaching-black-players-male-figures/

.
That was a good read and I also see this in education. Many times, black educators have a hard time connecting with students because kids just aren't USED to seeing a black male authority figure.

But with coaching, Funny, I brought this topic up on here years ago and people shot down the idea of Black Coaches having a hard time relating with/dealing with black players : https://niketalk.com/threads/sports-race-question-black-vs-white-coaches.291596/

There is a one sided view that exists here. If it does not come from a white perspective, one that supports equality from their vantage point, then it cannot be valid.
You challenge them on that, they then drape their willful ignorance inside the blanket of victimhood. I had that experience in the NBA thread, thus starting this one.

Yup...teacher and part time coach here as well. I teach in a predominantly white suburban area, the past couple of years they redid some school lines and have started busing in kids from areas that normally wouldn't be attending this school. Believe it or not the black student's gave more a harder time (initially before I built rapport with them) than any other demographic.

Ahmed Johnson recalled a disturbing incident backstage; he saw The Rock talking with members of D-Generation X, and Johnson claimed that The Rock was denying his black heritage. Rock is half-black and half-Samoan, but he allegedly told DX that his mother slept with a white man, which is how he was conceived. One can only imagine the locker room atmosphere backstage, if The Rock felt the need to lie about his ethnic roots.
