So Biggie dissed Raekwon in "Who Shot Ya" b/c Rae & Ghost dissed Biggie on "Shark ******"

"Intellectual and esoteric subject matter"

and once again, LS was mainly battle raps. GZA just did them in a much more skilled way that Biggie could not fathom let alone execute. Show me a Biggie versetouching Liquid Swords... Duel of the Iron Mic's... Living in the world today...

Yes as a matter of fact Hell yes.

GZa is my dude but Ready To Die was the Epitome of a Classic.
BIG literally revived the East Coast by his self.

did you see "lyrically" ? and "revived the east coast" ?

maybe commercially, but that's where it stops.

The GZA might would have had a shot, but Killah Priest?!? He ain't even an OG Wu member.

Did you listen to how Biggie straight took Rae's raps on Criminology, and flipped it.

See, the word "skilled." I don't know if it's fair to Biggie to use "skilled." One may argue that Big had more"skill" in that his songs were lyrically amazing but also fantastic songs. GZA never made a "One More Chance (Remix)"...a track that Biggiemurdered and also killed the radio. We were also fortunate enough to see what Biggie could do to a RZA beat...and you know how that came out, complete flames.

Don't get me wrong. GZA is in my top 5 dead or alive (along w/ Big). But let's just say comparing the two is apples and oranges.

That's your reply? ....a "lol?"

You have a "PHD in Hip-Hop", yet you can't thoughtfully reply with your opinion?

You talking like that's not the #%@@@!* point

In whatother category would that matter? Commercial in the 90s was a good thing. The mainstream rap was filled with good/great music. Biggie doing that wasundeniable. Trying to laugh it off

Yall just love to hate and not give credit where it's due.

I can't seriously reply to "GZA might have had a shot, but not KP because he wasn't an OG Wu member".

The fact that we are even discussing Biggie being in their league lyrically is shocking to me. Dude was nice, I appreciate what he did for rap, he had muchmore commercial success than either GZA or KP did.. but that's where it stops. I look at Biggie lyrics as laughable compared to legendary GZA and KP verseswhich I hold up as standards for what lyricism is.

BIG literally revived the East Coast by his self.

Yep.................. Illmatic & 36 Chambers had NOTHING to do with it. That's why BIG sucked off, D rode NAS & the Wu collectively.

BIG "brought it back all by himself" only to the radio dummies who don't know any better. The mid 90's was a WAVE of classic east coastalbums.

The alliteration and metaphors were just too much. Like a soul singer hitting the perfect notes, over the perfect instrumental at the perfect time. GZA justdidn't have that. Lyrically great (top 10 IMO) but musically average. He was more of an intellectual than a musician. Bigs voice alone put him over thetop.

BIG didn't want it with the God. Ask that !$@*#% Mase, I did work on that !%+##@ jaw. BIG woulda got the same.

All that aside though, RIP, he may be gone but his legacy survives.

Word, his voice puts him over GZA lyrically ?
laugh.gif

and those few bars are worthy of comparison to great GZA verses ?
laugh.gif

this thread is comedy.

'93/'94 were already filled with great east coast albums. Saying otherwise is just ignorance. Biggie bought attention to NYC with his success, but asfar as quality music.. this was there regardless of BIG.

In comparison, to what the west was doing at the time it was Big and Bad Boy. I don't subscribe to that according to "radio dummies"bs cuz technically when you look at the albums that were released in the 90s on the east coast we never left. This is all on a mainstream level andshouldn't be taken as some insult to those albums. It's not a situation where the east were releasing trash and the west was dropping classics and thenRTD came out. It's a simple situation of out of most of the albums RTD got that recogition.

plain and simple

To all that think anybody on the wu can hold a candle to big is obviously on yayo

Like be real they are nice but no way jose.

I can't believe some of the comments on here.

If you're gonna sit here and have an argument about commerical vs. underground hip-hop like this is 1998, then I can't do that. But what I can do istell you that the N made two classic albums and is considered to be one of the nicest ever to touch the mic. Killa Priest had some incredibly dope rhymes, butBig had the same....w/ classic songs and albums.

And must I say it again. GZA is one of the top 5 ever...

This verse is cool, but this GZA verse will blow that out the water

I'm deep down in the back streets - in the heart of Medina
About to set off something more deep than a misdemeanor
Under the subway, waiting for the train to make noise
So I can blast a n__ and his boys - for what?
He pushed up on the block and made the dope sales drop
Like the crashin of Dow Jones stock
I had to connect to cross seals, to catch more mil's
Than ho-b____ got birth control pills
I'm in the park, settin up a deal over blunt fire
Bum n____ sleepin on the bench, they had em wired
Peeped my convo, the address of my condo
And how I changed a n____ name to John Doe
And while we set up camp, we got Vamp
Put the stake through his heart, I ripped his f____ fangs apart
Snake got smoked on the set like Brandon Lee
Blown out the frame, like Pan Am flight 103
He got swung on, his lungs was torn, the
kingpin just castled with his rook and lost a pawn
A regular on the block, and played look-out
For playing predator with a glock, he should have took out

We are talking about both flat out lyrically. Go look at GZA's Liquid Sword's lyrics, then go look at Biggie's RTD lyrics. No comparison.

I'm not saying Illmatic and 36 Chambers aren't classics I'm just saying that they came and went without much fanfare. U crazy if you think thoserecords would have gotten checked if BIG never dropped RTD.

You never back up your statements with anything but "

"s and tired cliches.

Who is even remotely inferring that 93/94 wasn't filled with great music?
eyes.gif

Did I say that his voice made him lyrically better than GZA? Does that even make sense? Do you not see the devices of alliteration and metaphors in my veryfirst sentence?

When it comes down to debating real work instead of arguing simple commercial rap vs underground intellectual rap...y'all arguments always lose steam, right about now. Thats why there is a consensus among most people on certain artists and songs...then people like you just go against the grain to feel betterabout yourself.

Biggie can't do this:

My preliminary attack keep cemetaries packed
of n's who think it ain't like that
MC's are gunned down like being run down with mad trucks
Them God struck, religious @*%@#* call it bad luck
Rap celeb, you got caught up in the web
now bees are stingin, yo that n's em-singin
I'm just swingin swords strictly based on keyboards
Unbalanced like elephants and ants on see-saws
I throw raps that attack like the **** on Pearl Harbor
MC's be out like bank robbers
Fleeing the scene, to be a sole survivor
DJ the getaway driver
Tried to dip but he dive I socialize on vocal vibes
On tracks stabbed up with razor sharp knives
Criminal subliminal minded rappers find it
Hard to define it, when narrow is the gate
for fat tapes and then played out and out of date
Then I construct my thoughts on site to renovate
And from that point, the God made a statement
Draftin tracements, replacements in basements
materials in sheet-rock, to sound proof the beat box
and microscopic optics received through the boxes
obnoxious topic, major labels, flavor tropical
Punchlines, that's unstoppable
Ring like shots from glocks that attract cops
around the clubs and try to shut down the hip-hop
But we only increase if everything is peace
Father U C King the police

or

Yo
Picture bloodbaths and elevator shafts
Like these murderous rhymes tight from genuine craft
Check the print, it's where veterans spark the letterings
Slow moving MC's is waitin for the editin
The liquid soluble that made up the chemistry
A gaseous element, that burned down your ministry
Herbal vapors, and biblical papers
Smokin Exodus, every square yard is plush
++!# the screw-faced photo sessions facial expression
leaves impressions, try to keep a shark *$##! guessin
Give crazy shouts Son here's the outcome
Cut across the semi-gloss rhymes you floss
@$#! is outdated, just like neckloads of Sterlings
Suede-fronts, bell-bottoms, and tri-colored Shearlings
I ain't particular, I bang like vehicular homicides
on July 4th in Bed-Stuy
Where money don't grown on trees and there's thievin MC's
Who cut-throat to rake leaves
They can't breathe, blood splash, rushin fast
like runnin rivers, I be that whiskey in your liver

It's that simple.
