He was a 25-year-old who had money coming to him, whatever happened in life.

But for Brian McCarthy, son of the millionaire Marriott hotels president, his payday came much sooner than expected when he won $107 million on the Mega Millions lottery.

The son of hotels boss Robert McCarthy bought his winning ticket on a whim as he was withdrawing money from an ATM in inside a grocery store in Herndon, Virginia.

Winner: Brian McCarthy, 25, won $107 million on the Mega Millions lottery
Mr McCarthy's grandmother, who was with him when he found out that he'd hit the jackpot, offered to make him a grilled cheese sandwich to toast the win.

The regular lottery player was working as an account manager for Pepsi and had just moved back in with his parents when he won.

The lucky Penn State graduate had twice won $1,000 prizes from scratch-offs in the past.

Mr McCarthy has already started spending his winnings.

That's rich: Mr McCarthy has already bought a BMW and plans to go on a golfing holiday to Ireland
He took a cash pay-out of $68.4 million rather than taking the full amount in 26 annual payments.

Mr McCarthy has bought a BMW M3 and plans to go on a golf trip to Ireland. He has also donated $50,000 to two local charities.

His father, Robert McCarthy, earns an annual salary of around $1.2 million.

Having $68.4M at your expense to spend freely because you know millions will still be earned by your family and you will always be provided for (to a certain extent) for life must be absolutely
