I never understood how to play it so I usually just ended up kicking it instead.

tetherball was serious biz at my summer camp. The best is when the rope is pretty much done and you pull off a straight dikembe mutumbo block on the ball andrally it all the way back, by getting the crazy angle on the ball going, so the other person can't even physically hit it.
