**..:The Official Jewelry Thread Vol. 11: You get a Jesus piece! You get a Jesus piece! Everybody gets a Jesus piece:..**

no watch or jewelry is a investment period, no matter what anyone says...

that being said Ive made money on everything ive bought from lax aka rjwco when i sold it later on....

True, you will always lose money on watches and jewelry. If you are looking for an investment, look somewhere else. As far as spending the money all on oneitem, get the Breitling. I have Breitlings and Rolexes and I can assure you, the Breitling is nicer and more noticeable.

First of all not everyone has access to jewelers who could get Rolex at wholesale, most Rolex dealers only give 10%-15% the most and Rolex themselves are cracking on dealers who sell out of state by shipping or giving discounts. Plenty of Authorized Dealers lose their Rolex license/privilege because of that. Rolex monitors these stuff, hell they even have to pick the location of where they display the Rolexes in the store or else they will not allow them to sell it. So right there limits the buyer to finding someone like RJWCO who could get a "deal" or the grey market, which still doesn't offer as much discount as others may think. Plus theres also the factor of buying from an AD for the warranty and buying used can't come with the warranty since Rolex warranties are non-transferable.

With that said, Rolex isn't a good or even remotely the best investment... actually, it shouldn't be considered an investment at all. Investment has to earn you money in the future and even if you are able to sell your Rolex in 10 years for the same price you paid for it today, did it really gain value? Not really if you consider price inflation. Rolex prices goes up in price every year but so does the cost of living so a $2k Rolex 2 decades ago isn't exactly $2k in todays living costs so even if you sell that same watch for $3k, it didn't exactly earn you $3k so how can it be called an investment?

Now, others have made a living out of it like LawrenceB at TZ but you have to know watches and not everyone will be very knowledgeable when buying a watch and saying Rolex is the best investment is highly exaggerated. It's easy to fool people when it comes to Rolex, an used K serial Explorer might sell for $3,500 to someone who doesn't know when a used Z or M serial Explorer may sell for $2,500 to those who know watches. Sure it's the exact same watch, condition maybe the same but the K Serial was produced in 2001 while a Z serial was produced 2006, a 5 year difference in it's age. So I guess in that way, you can say it is an investment but in reality it is more of a business or hustle. It will not always work. As usual, the market will determine how well these watches will sell. In the current economic downturn, it is easier to buy a second hand Rolex for cheap so buy as much as you can now if you want and stock up before the market evens out again. The used market is a buyers market right now but it won't be for too long. Of course buying new and used are different stories.

If you want a watch that will really keep it's value, then get a Patek Phillipe.

SAY IT BRETHREN!

so you can get a patek for 5k? you probably can but some 1970's casino gold robert dinero looking one not cool.

as far as the warranty you dont think private dealers/pre owned watch stores offer warranty or some type of guarentee?

Ive never lost money on a rolex and havent had to sit on one for 10 years to make 1000$ profit.

Bigles Im happy you have made money on everything Ive sold you and a repeat customer as well
smile.gif

all im saying is RETAIL IS OVER........AND THE TAKEOVER IS HERE

I never said the guy had to get Patek, I am saying in general, Patek keep a better value.
Yeah, other dealers offer warranty but you do know that once a Rolex watch is opened by a non-authorized watchmaker they won't service or touch it anymoreright?
Rolex makes their own movements and I seriously would not let any watchmaker work with a Rolex, they do not use a run of the mill movement.
Again, you can make money from it, you're a jeweler. You got hook ups and connection, I could prowl the TimeZone Sales Corner and do the same but it ismore work than it really is worth for my part.
You, you got the time to do it, it is in your business. People with Rolexes can easily trade in for other jewelry and come up top or buy used from people whodon't know what they got and you can flip it for a lot more.
It's your business but watches are not investments, plain and simple. Not everyone can buy a Rolex and make money off of it.

I want to get this out there too, I got no hate towards anyone. Do what you got to do.
And I agree, retail are for suckers. I never, ever pay retail for any of the watches I owned.

Damn. People in that holiday spirit I see.

the funny thing of this little "argument" is basically everyone commenting prob has never owned a watch of any value or gone to trade/sell it in tosee what watches are worth what , besides RFX who has alot of dope watches.... no watch or jewelry is an investment, if you can break even or make a littlemoney on it, then thats great, but that cant be the reason you buy it...Ive bought and sold a ton of stuff over the past few years, well over 100k worth, sometimes you take a L, sometimes you can get your money back, good brand name watches are the easiest to get your money back from my experience....

Also about warrantees and authorized dealers and all that, I would never purchase a watch from a authorized dealer. The 2nd hand market is much cheaper and ifyou know where to shop you can save a ton of money and still get boxes/papers and everything.Every store in the diamond distrct that sells timepieceswarrantees them as well and all have top notch watchmakers who can work on anything. Now im probably biased because I live in NY so its easy for me to haveaccess to these places. I can see how it can be a problem if you live in a remote area.
Bottom line, whether you buy the watch new or 2nd hand w box and papers, when you go to sell it its a 2nd hand watch and has the same value regardless...whytake the depreciation hit?

Is it common practice for jewelers to sell cloudy diamonds???

I was at the mall yesterday and I hit up kay jewelers and zales and they had nothin but cloudy diamonds... I mean these are nationally known jewelery retailersand their ice was hot garbage even the higher end stuff didn't seem to shine right.
smh.gif

Basically I was looking for some everyday earrings to rock and had to go to the mom and pop shop to get what I really wanted.

Also, how much does it cost to get diamonds graded or certified? I'm not really into jewelry like that but am pretty interested in the whole process.

Thanks in advance...

^ kay and zales especially have the most ugliest diamonds ive seen but then again thats retail for you ^^

You mean appraised? I got my stuff appraised for $100 for the first item, and then $80 for the rest.
