the thread about nothing...

Just got this in an Amazon box with stuff I ordered. Anyone know who the McDowells are? - and why they think that a bag of salt is a good birthday gift?

So...yall rocking with the mental health day for Biles or did she quit? I know what I think...

It's all messy. Mental health is huge, and I dislike that some may use it as a out.
What Biles said were not mental health issues.

“Biles later said that she was dealing with a number of mental health issues, including an intense pressure to achieve perfection and fear of how she would be judged by the public at large.”

Thats just called being nervous..

Anxiety can affect mental health

I'm rooting for all black people, but yeah...she quit.

And that's why this mental health stuff was always a slippery slope. Cuz all that stuff is mental...but not a good enough reason to not compete, IMO.

I've read a lot of "she owes no one nothing" and that's all true, but call a spade a spade.

I don't have a stance on it. I'm just an observer-

Like Osaka and others before, the optics look a little jaded.

Do they all have mental health/nervousness/ shyness?

I don't know, maybe they're not related.

Osaka's feels very different to me. She originally planned on competing but didnt feel well enough to discuss her matches afterwards, which I get as a guy who hates talking. When she was told that easnt acceptable and she had to do the post pressers she said okay, I'll just pull out the tourney as I dont want to follow your rules at this time.

All of that seems within reason.

The reasoning for Biles pulling out just kind of reads like a quitter. She didnt have her A stuff...was nervous about it and said nah I cant do it today. Shes accomplished way more in her life than I have so far. But I know quitting when I see it.

To be the first gymnast to qualify for both the individual and team finals since 1992 is a lot. I don't think she quit because of her performance because she still qualified. But maybe being THE name for US Olympics this year took a toll on her.

Like many of you have said, mental health is a slippery slope. But IMO, if you have been an Olympic athlete for x amount years, I would you be trained to handle the pressure a lot better than others would.

I hope she's alright though.

Id never dare say someone quit when they say its a mental health issue thing they have going on. Quite rude actually.

That’s why mental health is such a touchy subject. It always looks bad when people are skeptical or against the reasons someone says.

Biles has every right to do what she wants. I’m just unsure the reasons she listed are actually “mental health issues” when her reasons are things all athletes have to go through. It’s part of the job.

Yeah, I dont want to overlook the pressures of being an Olympian, especially as the face of the team. Definitely a ton to deal with and I can see it weighing someone down on certain days more than it does on others.

But as you began to point out, shes been the face for quite some time. This isn't new.

I too hope she'll be straight...seems like she will be. She didnt hint at depression, just at the fact that it's a lot to deal with. Hope it remains just a lot to deal with and doesnt get worse.

I recorded the Gymnastics Finals but haven't watched it yet. Out of the loop, don't know what happened to Biles. But damn, she hasn't lost a Major competition in 8 years.

Just to come back to this, isnt this pressure on each and every Olympian? It's a part of all high level competition where massive amounts of money is involved.

I dunno man...

I had a post a few minutes ago in the social media thread and seems like it fits in this situation...these young men and women need to focus on being themselves, not business brands with millions of dollars on the line based on 2 weeks worth of performance.
