I live in Charlotte and traveling through sc to and from Charleston I've seen Klan signs attempting to recruit new members.
In myrtle beach I've seen ppl fly or wear Confederate flags in certain places. When you enter said places as a black person you get looked at like an alien.
Parts of NC once you leave Charlotte just like a lot of SC is trump country and they make it known.
I think ppl that dont regularly see **** like that and that are living comfortably need to educate themselves before they make ridiculous comments about ppl giving more energy to this old tired issue now than they did back in the day. Ppl died over being in the wrong place. Ppl still get shot at and cursed at etc.
Since I moved down south I've had trash thrown at me while i was walking by someone in a speeding car. I've been called a ****ing ******...I've been called ****** a few times actually. I've gotten stares, ppl locking car doors, ladies on elevators clutching bags which i thought was some TV ****, etc.
And ive def been to areas with that flag where they treat you like ****.
I remember I dated this girl down here and was walking with her 4 year old daughter at the time from the car to Walmart and some white person tried to speed up and hit us in the parking lot.
There are hateful ppl everywhere tho and I'm not trying to say that the south has a monopoly on hatred towards black ppl...you can get ****ted on in NYC and I def have stories dealing with bull**** in queens too but yeah, anyone sitting comfortably in Manhattan trying to push this idea that nobody cared about the flag or whatever until recently is bull****.
I've talked to older ppl in the south and came with my own ignorant NYC **** and got corrected. Some ppl risked their lives being vocal and not putting up with it even back in the day.
