Why don't you ask these people if they think tornadoes are appreciated?
ONLY way they are appreciated is if they are in the middle of field some where. Other then that, no way.

It actually looks scary when it touches ground as opposed to a strong hurricane. I appreciate their power.

Of course he doesn't appreciate the destruction but the power of nature and the beauty of it. Same goes for the eye of a hurricane or a lighting bolt...
I live in Indiana...definitely Tornado Alley. However, I'd like to see a tornado in my lifetime...without dying or anything.
