Work/Life Balance Is Overrated

Usually when you work over 40 isn't it time and a half??.. I know mines is..

I know mines is....but I'm still considered salary. If I only work 10 hrs a week I still get paid for 40 and anything over 40 is time in a half.

What does it mean then? I am very very efficient at my job so if a project that takes 5 hours for my co-worker to complete and I can do it for 3-4 hours, doesn't it mean I am obviously better skilled than him?

Ok, it wasn't explained that way. I wasn't speaking on the same job tip.

I was thinking he was saying if you work more hours then someone who made more then you then your just a sucker.

Two indications of when you've crossed the line of working too much:

1) negative health affects on your body/mind
2) alienation of family, loved ones, and friends (this can include yourself as well)

The problem with these two things is that 90% of the time we ourselves cannot point them out/we don' t stop it from getting worse until its too late. In most cases others point it out to us and we get offended and classify them as "haters"


this is coming from a self-employed business owner whose business does 200k + a year....so yes I do work a lot, but i know the realities of working too much. Truth is it never outweighs the joy of happiness and good health with loved ones.

Using your mind to make money > using your body and physical exertion

that is the ultimate combo breaker when it comes to wealth

genius and business magnates aside...

You need to get compensated for the time you work. Period.

If the guy next to you is making the same but it takes you 1.5 times the amount of time it takes him to do the exact same job... You're losing.

If the guy next to you makes more and works less... And y'all have the same job... You're double losing.

I am not sure if this is serious advice or not, because I do the most work in my department by far and get paid the least becuase I'm the newest. Everyone else is in the twilights of their careers though so I doubt they really care.

I used to work in sports, hours are crazy, perks are amazing (*if you're a sports fan), the pay is crap.

Decided I wanted to make more money, still working about 50-60 hours a week, but more stable, and have side ventures on the side. I'm basically out of the house from 9am to 9pm.

Not really, I've seen plently of people around me who quite frankly I am much better than get promoted and I havent receive anything. Tenure far outweights aptitude in a lot of cases. Its annoying to see, but it is what it is.

It's not about the quantity of work. it's about the QUALITY.

I can personally say, I've gotten promoted several times just based off the quality of my work. I do more with very little time. Working smart and efficiently means more than working long hours and getting stuff done.

I never said it was all about the amount of work. If you have to work 60 hrs to do the same amount someone else can do in 40 then you're a liability. In this scenario we're controlling for aptitude and work product and we're assuming that, all things being equal, the dude who works an extra 20 hrs and gets more done is gonna be promoted sooner.
