Any Journalism Majors on NT? I'm an economics major now, but have interest in Journalism (although I do not think it is the path i'll take). However, Iwould like some info on the classes, jobs, and anything that really has to do with the major. Thanks NT.

Expect to take classes on news writing, business writing, etc.

Copy Editing will force you to step up your grammar game. You'll learn a lot in this class, especially the "proper" way to write certainstories...if you get anything out of this class, you'll be able to see how certain newspapers ( *cough* NY Post) let a lot of little errors slide.

You might have to submit articles for your school newspaper. It's a good idea to do that anyway--gives you experience that you can put on a resume.

You gotta like writing, really like writing. Be willing to write stories about stray cats and crap like that. You gotta start out writing anything andeverything thats asked of you. It takes a lot to get anywhere with it, and you gotta work all hours. Journalism is not something I'd recomend majoring in,however it works real well as a minor, since its something nice to add on, and would probably put you in a better position to get a job with a website ormagazine relating to econ. But the writing biz is in such a sad state right now that its best to stay away.

I just graduated with a Journalism-Advertising degree. Lots of writing classes involved. Copy Editing, News writing, public relations are all major parts ofit. I enjoyed it. I ended up getting a sales job with the Houston Astros though. I didn't follow my major my minor (sports marketing).

I'm currently majoring in journalism at Indiana University, and it's very interesting. You learn to write in a completely different way than what youwere taught in general education. You also will most likely have to take classes that involve law, public relations, and advertising. Many schools requirethose that major in journalism to have a mandatory minor or second concentration. Mine is political science, but the majority of people that I talk to chosepublic relations as their minor. I've heard of graduates getting jobs with the wall street journal, mtv, ford, dolce and gabana, and other cool companiesand whatnot. Apparently a journalism degree can open the door to many public relations jobs, not just print work. And as previously stated, make sure to writefor any of your school's publications. You even get paid to write for the IDS as IU.

I recommend majoring in it, if you have high interest in being a journalist.

I major in journalism, and if you like writing and have a knack for it, then I suggest you do the same.

just switched from accounting to journalism but kept accounting so now i have a double major

Coming from a journalist, if you want to get into the business, do not major in journalism unless your school has a really good program.

You would be better served majoring in English or Political Science.

Well yes, but you have to have a very high interest, like when you wake up in the morning and you know you have to go interview the crazy catlady, you don't want to shoot yourself.

man it's tough to get in the field without experience. Try to get internships and whatnot. The one mistake I made. smh @ me.

If you're an econ major, hopefully you've also learned that journalists aren't exactly getting rich.

With that being said, I went to Ohio University and found my job less than a month after graduation. If I could go back and do it again, I'd have spent alot more time focusing on something with online specialties.

Im a Journalism Major in NYC and most of my professors write for pretty well known publications( NY times, Village Voice, etc.) From my conversations with themI would agree that you need some sort of backup plan because the industry is very unstable at the moment. If you like writing most of the classes are veryinteresting. Sometimes I feel a little constricted because the news writing formant doesn't give much room for stylistic writing. I would suggest you startfreelance writing while your still in college, its another source of income and It gives you that much needed exp.

Focus on Public relations rather than journalism, it is basically the same stuff but PR degree goes further. Every company needs a PR.

Telecommunications is where you want to be.
or Radio, TV, Film or Mass Communications. Different programs at different schools.

I majored in Radio, TV, Film with a minor in Communication Studies.

I got two backup plans in place right now...this economyis just
smh.gif

Freelance writing is a good way to go while you are still in college. But you basically have to be a damn good writer as you may have to write about a diverserange of topics. One of my professors invited a freelancer to our class and she was telling us how she had written articles on interior design, hunting, citylife...you pretty much have to be a jack of all trades.

You can also try your luck submitting an article to a local newspaper...if they publish it, you'll get a little bit of money (not a whole lot, but anymoney is better than none) and it would look great on a resume.

I heard that the best thing to do is to contact the editors of magazines you would like to write for and ask them what types of articles theywould be interested in buying. That way you have a better idea of what your going to be writing about. If Journalism doesn't work out im think im gonna gointo teaching. My other option would be public relations or sports management.

You can major in anything if you want to be a news anchor.

In the end, it doesn't really matter if you have a degree in botany or journalism, the only thing that news directors look for is if you can get the jobdone.

That means internships, working for your campus television station, anything. The only thing that matters in TV news is experience and make sure you have agood reel.

Jobs in TV news are there, but you have to be willing to work anywhere.

Unless it's one of the top graduate schools in journalism I wouldn't do it. What you learn in a year or two (not to mention accumulate indebt) won't give you an edge over someone who has been in the business for that period of time.

im majoring in journalism/communications and i have no idea what the hell i wanna do for a longterm career.... probably gonna swith to PR soon.
