Journalism Majors

Im a Journalism major at FIU. Originally I wanted to be a music journalist and work for XXL or Complex magazines, something
along those line. Over the last year or so I have lost interest in the hip hop music scene (lack of talented artists) so now I
have no idea what I want to do. I graduate this year too, so I need to figure it out.

Journalist here. Degree in '02.

Tips:

- Love writing. I mean LOVE it... like crafting sentences and paragraph flow and knowing when/when not to punctuate and having something helpful/enriching tosay. You have to have a real desire to communicate.

- Write as many news clips as possible. Get into your college newspaper, get to know as many people there as possible, and write every story/interview you canget your hands on. Do not stop asking for opportunities. You can never have too many stories to your credit. Never.

- Get to know your writing professors and ask them a million questions. Know where you want to go and ask them how to get there. Then heed their wisdom.

- Read. Read what you're interested in. Read magazines, newspapers, websites, books, menus, road signs. Read. You will be amazed at how it will expand yourunderstanding of language and how to use it, as well as how it expands your grammar bank.

- Do not be afraid to be a writer. Don't pass on a story because of intimidation or self-doubt. Consistent determination is required.

- Experience and enjoy life. It's been said that as a writer you can't experience life without writing about it but you can't write about lifewithout experiencing it (responsibly, of course).

Telecommunications is where you want to be.
or Radio, TV, Film or Mass Communications. Different programs at different schools.

I majored in Radio, TV, Film with a minor in Communication Studies.
Mass communications is what I should do ?

&nd then what ? I really want to work at a new station ...
Well, I work for ESPN Radio so its kind of similar but I dont know a whole lot about TV. Do all the internships you can so you get that experienceand start networking. Does your school have a University TV Station? Start getting involved with that.

Get experience behind the mic/camera because things are alot different when you are on live and have to adjust on the fly.

I dunno about that. In the long run, if you're good its gonna be enjoyable where they send you to travel and do a good story or 2 a week, butin the start you're gonna be sitting in an office doing local stories every day. The only way you're not going to be miserable is to get a job youreally like. Every job sucks, its just a matter of how much you like it for you to enjoy it.

Good advice.

Since there are so many journalism people on NT we need to all exchange info. Never know when down the line you may need to call up an old NT'er forsomething.
