ART DISCUSSION: What is art? Who/what inspires you?

Those Ron English toy soldier sculptures are excellent. Really loving those.

For one of my latest paintings, I've been using a lot more paint and palette knife then I've ever used. I've been looking at Alex Kanevsky and Nicolas de Stael as influences as far as paint application and process. I'll have something to show later tonight (at least an in progress.)

Some de Stael's

yap.
Those de Staels are amazing, love his art.

My apologies if this has been discussed already, as I haven't been able to browse this read yet, but The NYT recently had an interesting article on the emergence of the study of neuroscience and art.

ART, NEUROAESTHETICS, NEUROSCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY
What is art? What does art reveal about human nature? The trend these days is to approach such questions in the key of neuroscience.

If you live near Atlanta or ever get the chance, I HIGHLY recommend stopping by the High Museum. Our class trip there on Tuesday was amazing. They had a traveling exhibition called Picasso to Warhol and it showcased works from 15 major artists of that time period. Had Picasso, Matisse, Duchamp, Mondrian, Pollock, Warhol, and more. As impressive as those were, I was completely blown away by this guy, Grainger McKoy. He made hyper-realistic bird sculptures and they were phenomenal. I tried to find images but they don't do it justice because you simply cannot see the level of detail this guy used.

Personally, I don't really respect artists who resort to drugs and other paraphernalia to spark their creativity.
It's a very dangerous thing.

I'll expound on my points later, as presently, I have an ArtH paper I need to focus on, word to being 4 days past the due date...

I need to go over what was posted on this page when I have some time this weekend.

So as I'm working on my latest paintings, I've purchased new paints to replace the ones I was using before. For those just getting a start in oil paints, there is a HUGE difference between the "real" paints and the "hues". For a while, I used Cadmium Red Hue. It's a bright/orangeish red and I use it to make pinks with white (Alizarin Crimson isn't great for pink.) Recently, I picked up a tube of Cadmium Red Medium and it's

. The difference between the two when compared side by side is ridiculous. The real Cadmium Red is seriously so much more vivid. It makes the hue look subdued even though before I got the real version, it was the most vivid color I owned. The difference in price between a tube of the real Cadmium and the hue is about $13 though

For beginners, it might make more economic sense to start off with the hues since you'll be going through paint not really knowing what you're doing but when you hit a point where you're comfortable with the medium, I seriously recommend going for the good stuff. You'll never want to go back.

Supplies are insanely expensive, good ones at least. On the color difference, I'm waiting for some kind of acryl paint that has the intense color of an oil paint, although this won't happen.

@FOG- I'd say it really depends what your doing, using these substances did great for Masson's or Miro's art (although Miro simply didn't eat in a lot of the cases, causing hallucination), but I don't think it would've done Malevich too much good if he smoked.
happy.gif
. As for myself, I like to drink a glass now and then or smoke to view a painting a bit differently. I don't think it fundamentally changes your views, but can provoke creativity in many cases, yet again it can cause the loosing of concentration.
Psychedelics are a bit different, don't know if you guys have seen this, kind of interesting:

Apparently Mister Brainwash(Banksy) was at Basel this year. I'm super pissed I wasn't there. FML.

Appreciate it fam. First time doing a 3d print and I had a "fun" time trying to make sure it actually worked with glasses. It was also my first all-text print too but I think it came out great (graphic design background ftw!)

Damn. Banksy is NOT Mr. Brainwash.

Mr.Brainwash (and his work, and his shows) are all pathetic.

And BTW, Bansky hijacked his style from a dude named blek le rat.

To me, I love to blaze and critique my art. Cannabis can alter my perceptions, where I can almost give myself my own crit. My conclusion: Cannabis is great when thinking about new ideas and reflecting on art; however, anything production/craft aspect of creating, I want to be sober. Only drugged on caffeine, maybe some tobacco. There are all types of drugs out there and its important not to judge people on which one's they use. Drugs effect everybody differently.
p0tat0 5alad- does that 3d actually work? I like the idea, probably even better if it was never intended to work.

reminds me of Barbara Kruger:

At the gallery I'm at now, before I was there, they did a Blek Le Rat show. He left his mark in the parking structure out back too.

What do you guys think about neckface?

I don't think you can call it hijacking or plagiarism, he did take inspiration, but he's works show differences, although in the same style. It's pretty cool what Blek did, does and considering the fact he's been doing it since the 80's is
eek.gif
. Not to mention how he took fine, museum art into the streets.
About neckface, I like the colors of the last piece of work, but the rest, hmmm....

^that's pretty trippy man.

So where did that guy go who thought drugs mixed with art was evil?

It's finals week, pardon me for not contributing like I use too--got paintings to paint, woodcuts to cut, illustrations to color, etc...

On the matter of drugs and art, it boils down to this for me (and I promise to elaborate when I finally get the chance):

An artist who uses drugs and/or relies on them to spark his/her creativity so no different than an athlete who uses and/or relies on performance enhancement drugs to boost his/her athletic prowess. Unl

The real issue for me, however, is the danger of over-reliance that comes with using drugs to enable one's creative output. If you just so happen to create all your best works while being under the influence of some drug(s), then chances are you will continue using said drug(s) in order to keep up the output of quality work. At this point, you've relinquished your ability and power to create quality work, consciously and freely.

It's important to learn how to "command" and/or spark creativity consciously, as opposed to unconsciously because of being under the reliance of drugs. Remember, creativity is what led to the first bow and arrow. Creativity is the reason why we humans are the apex species on this planet; it is the cornerstone of our evolution. Simply stated, creativity is a very powerful thing. Don't go $**$#%# with it with drugs.

Straight up hate this chick (not really, jp) because of how original she is. Remember being blown away by her stuff when I first saw it, and I still am today...

For her sake, however, and especially that of her models, I hope she's using non-carcinogenic paints...

I think Neckface is incredibly overrated
laugh.gif
I think he's got decent illustrative skills (he has a unique style at the very least) but, like many other graff artists, I think he's only famous for getting up as opposed to creating compelling work. Maybe aesthetically pleasing art is enough for some but I tend to gravitate towards works with a bit more substance.

If you guys liked the Alexa Meade work, you might be interested in Liu Bolin. He gets painted and then "disappears" into the background. Kind of a one trick pony but very interesting work nonetheless.
