How has Russell Wilson managed to stay above the criticism aimed at black QBs?

Damn i swore his mom was white, guess I was mistaken. I remember seeing a segment on Russell and I could of sworn they showed a white as his mother.

Someone also brought up a good point in the NFL thread...what if Cam/Kap had the same reaction to a loss like Andy Dalton? Can you imagine the media firestorm?

Stayblessed - QB's like Romo, Brady, Tebow, etc. are mostly criticized for things football related. Get back to me when someone gets on them about having a disingenuous smile, too many tattoos, to stupid to remember a playbook, being too hood, or just being a cornball. All of which has been covered or beaten to death by the media. It's only a matter of time before Teddy Bridgewater is torn down for something trivial.
Tebow has been criticized for being a cornball

Tebow was criticized for not being bright enough to remember an nfl playbook

Got two on that list with other critiques that were not listed, I'll be honest not many white qb's are labeled as hood or have many tattoos. But like I said we all know they get their fair share of criticism off the field.

nah. If Cam got in a refs face like Brady does. Flags would fly. Fines would be coming in. ESPN would call him a thug

Because Dalton sucks and everyone knows it. All you hear is about how Cam and Kaep are supposed to be the next big things so naturally, people want to knock them from that pedestal. Has nothing to do with race in my opinion. If Dalton was looked at as being a future elite then they would've thrown a **** storm just as well.

Dalton has gotten a ton of criticism locally. Not sure if it went national but I saw some national stories on it and locally he is destroyed

Media attention and criticism aside, I'd take Kaep or Newton's football skills over Dalton's any day of the week, even with the extra attention and all that.

It's easy to see who the good ballers are.

I had no idea about Wilson's Christain beliefs.

And Cam's criticism has gone down exponentially. Except on NY.

It's performance based and being held to the standards that pundits and fanboys hold that player to. That's why I hate that race is the default paradigm for any criticism given to a black quarterback.

I actually think race has a lot to do with it. I mean, Dalton was pretty much ho-hum after that loss. Deflecting blame. Continuing w/ Dalton, are there any articles questioning his character b/c he's a ginger? Trivial, right? Same as the smile example and also w/ the tats. Has NOTHING to do with playing quarterback. I just think there is an extreme double-standard for black QBs and they truly face an uphill battle to 1) not be stereotyped and 2) have their character assassinated from what to me, is nothing more than nit-picking due to the color of their skin.

That double standard is true for everyone that isn't a WHM.

It sucks, but it's there.  At least these guys have the opportunity now to make millions and live in luxury.  Progress will be made, slowly, but surely.

Yea its a shame too for qb's like Tebow who had their character assassinated because he said he is a Christian and virgin had nothing to do with football. Does that count though because he's not black ?

Colin is the first starting QB to be covered in tats. Not sure why you wouldn't expect some type of criticism or reaction. QBs have been the face of these franchises, of course it's gonna scare white people. To be fair, I think if Rivers or Carson or any white QB stepped on covered in tats, they would get the same reaction.

I think Dalton didn't get roasted because everyone knows he's not good and he won't be advancing in his status. Cam was giving bad interviews and body language but people still expect a lot more out of him. I haven't heard anything negative about him this year now that his team is winning. You can see he has also made some changes on and off the field.

It's just with which lenses we view the situation.

You say it's nothing about playing quarterback, but that's not exactly what I mean. It's the expectations and hype that come along with Cam, for instance, and not with a guy like Dalton. I think people are trying too hard to find something and when that something is found, even if it's very minute, it gets overblown into race being the main factor all of a sudden.

Quarterbacks especially, that appear to fall short of expectations, no matter what color, will get nitpicked. Happened to, among others, Alex Smith, Roethlisberger, Leinart, just about all of them you can point to instances where they got destroyed in the media.

If you're labeled "the next..." and appear to humbly take on that label, only to eventually say things and do things or not play up to those expectations, you get lambasted. Simple as that.

I think his sub 50% completion percentage and mediocre play had more to do with his character assassination than his beliefs. But that's just me. He just wasn't a good quarterback. All the other guys I mentioned, are. However, they faced criticism of a trivial manner for the most idiotic reasons.

I don't agree with anyone who says "McNabb, Cam, Rg3 get that pressure just because they deserve it." Because almost every player in the league can deserve some criticism for their body language or their failures from time to time. We always talk, for example, about the tantrums Tom Brady throws on the bench or yelling up in a ref's face after a loss. Or Andy Dalton going out there and taking no responsibility for his loss. Or Aaron Rodgers making a fool of himself pledging to the integrity of Ryan Braun. Or Peyton Manning's weak playoff record. Or Eli playing like complete garbage for years before finding success.

But no matter what their actual relative actions, whether it's on the field, or in front of the media, or it is actually serious transgressions (Big Ben would be an example of that), few of these white QBs receive the constant, you-can-not-make-any-mistake, full-court media press of criticism and nitpicking that a large number of black QBs do. (Jay Cutler would be an example of a guy who does). It's a "guilty until proven innocent" attitude.

And they ALL get it. You can't convince me that Cam deserves to be **** on by the media because he is learning to be a leader on a team that had 2 wins the year before, while playing well and being liked by his teammates, just because he makes a couple mistakes at the podium in his second year. Or even that RG3 deserves the fever pitch of attacks he's getting in his second year on a team where his coach and owner are acting like 15-year old girls. Or that McNabb ever deserved the constant scrutiny he got despite an excellent career that unfortunately never ended in a Super Bowl.

When Rush Limbaugh went out and said McNabb was overrated because he was black (one of the dumbest things I've ever heard, because McNabb was if anything underrated and over-criticized at the time), he spoke from the kind of perspective that a lot of people in this country see with. And that is the mentality that if a QB is black, that kid does not deserve a pass for any action- you have the right to tear apart every little thing he does to find a flaw you can pull out and try to define him with.

Except no one assassinated Tebow's character. The criticism he receives is all directly related to his play on the field.

Meanwhile his supporters want him elevated because they agree with his beliefs in spite of his play on the field.

I'm not so sure about that assumption, Rush got plenty of negative feedback for his ridiculous comments

Brady's antics in-game is only rivaled by Owens and my boy barely gets criticized for it

Ima Brady Stan but I've noticed it

Remember when he cursed bill o brien on the sideline years back?

And im not even gonna get on the disrespect mike Vick still gets after serving prison time AND losing tens of millions too

Guaranteed if Cam had won a Super Bowl then he'd get a pass for a lot of his actions going forward. You just can't use Rodgers and Brady as examples, because no matter what you say, winning and being the best in the game buys you a pass and there's examples of that everywhere. It's natural instinct to give leeway to those that have proven their success in their own respective fields.
