Just moved from cali to minnesota

Welcome to my city OP :pimp:

Most of the other MNNTers laced you with advice, just wanted to welcome you to the city.

Edit: Since everyone else gave you social advice, I'm gonna give you some life advice since you're coming from Cali.

1. Buy a shovel and sidewalk salt. Why? You can and will be fined by the city of Minneapolis if you do not shovel the sidewalk in front of your house and the driveway (even if its in back.) Fines can very but they WILL tax you. A neighbor of my mom was fined $500.

2. Invest in long johns for you and your girl, get some blankets for the baby. I see so many mothers walking with their babies in the winter without protecting their kids from the wind, snow, etc. The baby should be covered while out doors at all times during the winter, and should not be outside for more than 15-20 minutes at any one time if possible.

3. Minnesota has a cold weather rule for necessary utilities like Gas and Electric. Basically, this means a couple of things: you can elect to pay just about anything for your monthly bill during the winter months and they can't shut off your service if you are paying what you can afford. Since bills flucuate wildly between summer and winter, a lot of people will just pay $x for the entire year so they underpay during the winter and over pay during the summer to even it out.

4. People in MN are very passive agressive. If someone says "That shirt is different" or "Thats an interesting idea," they're probably really trying to say that the shirt is ugly, or the idea is stupid. We have a really bad habit of talking in circles and hinting at things rather than saying whatever it is outright, so just keep that in the back of your head whenever you hear someone say "Thats interesting, but...."

5. Be vigilant when it comes to parking and parking signs. There are weird parking signs all around the cities; 1hr parking here, 2hr parking there, no parking on Tuesdays from 2AM-7AM, etc. (thats an actual sign on Marshall Ave.) Not to mention snow emergencies, where you have to arbitrarily park on the odd or even side of the street when the plows run. They will definitely tow your car without a second thought, so again, be vigilant.

6. If you notice frost on the inside of your car, open your outside air vents before turning off your car. Seems counterintuitive, but it'll prevent the frost.

7. Keep some rubbing alcohol in your trunk or garage if your locks freeze. Just put some of the alcohol on the key and it will break up the ice inside the lock.

8. Put socks on your windshield wipers to protect them from icing over.

9. Just about every employer offers metro transit discounts to their employees. Catching the bus/lightrail is a super easy way to commute, so if you aren't against public transportation I would highly recommend it versus driving everyday.

10. Familia, Cal Surf, Phenom, Studiiyo23, and Friedmans are some of the more low-key sneaker spots. Cal Surf usually has stock longer than the other stores, especially when it comes to SBs.

Enjoy playa. :pimp:

Well I can check this off my bucket list. "Know" someone from one of those lesser fly over states.

Sidenote when you eventually get tired of living out there, come to NoVa and prosper. The best place in the world to raise a family and flourish. :pimp: :pimp:

I always wanted live in Minnesota for a year or two but reading how much you guys hate Californians it looks like I would have to be fading dudes left and right every day

I always have this in my head. I feel like if I ever moved somewhere, dudes would hate hard and bring out all the stereotypes.

Damn man sounds miserable having to transition from not doing any of that, to doing just one of those things. I've lived in Cali for damn near 30 years, I still use remote start to warm up my truck when it's in the mid to high 50s.

I think it was a Melina's (sp?) some dude was drunk and ranting about being from Sacramento .. Good thing not many hmong people live in nyc or nj

weather getting pretty bad over here next to the water too, want to say it was low 40's

im praying  for you OP...i dont mind the cold but i aint living in it bruh

Appreciate that.
Ill try to embrace minnesota.

I can't even imagine leaving Cali for MN. :smh:

No In N Out? :smh: :smh:

Sometimes life doesn't really work out as planned and gotta do it for the fam.

No in and out but we got..white castle?
Damn gonna miss in and out...N mexican foood..
You just moved to the burger capital of the world man.

Mexican food is everywhere. Lake street is like the little Mexico or whatever I guess you could say. That's not the only place to get it but you can choose from 30 places on lake. I like taco taxi and hacienda and andale. Andale is in Richfield but they are on point and good guys.

Burgers are all over but matts is good, red cow, revival has a good one, Lyn 65, blue door pub (St. Paul, mpls one is always trash), I'm probably missing a bunch of burger spots.

It's getting blown out of proportion. It's snowed once this year and it's all gone now. Also not been below freezing for a grip. I never had a lock freeze on me either. Keyless entry takes care of that.

It's like a week or two in February that is hell. Other than that it's not that bad. Not saying our weather is amazing in the winter but it's not as bad as some make it out to be. No different than any other cold place and probably snows less than a lot of them. I swear it used to snow way more here.

I just spent 3 hours standing on the sidelines in 48 degree weather with hella layers. I just don't see how anything much colder than that is liveable.

 so true

I thought I was going to die yesterday morning when it was 40F. What does negative weather even feel like?? How are your eyeballs not freezing.

Born and raised in Cali. I can handle "up" to 20 degrees, all I need is a Uniqlo or North Face down jacket. Anything lower than that can @$#@ off though, so that's why I would never move to any other major area in the US.

Apparently 1/4 of Americans that tried or joined isis were from Minnesota ..
Sounds about right. I'm sure other guys remember the dude from mn who went to Somalia after he joined some group and got executed. That dude went to high school with me. I'm probably not the only guy in here who has known someone to do that. They're always talking about it on the news.
