LAD and it commercial success was something to imitate and you can hear it in the production, concepts and lyricism of a large percentage of albums after that. Check Jay's "In My Lifetime" series, "The Carters", Nas "I Am", The Clipse albums, Ghostface more recent albums. Those are much more LAD than Illmatic. Thats what i'm saying. Hypnotize, "Loving" you tonight, Notorious Thugs, Missing You, Story To Tell, Somebodys Gotta Die....those tracks have been immitated to death...still till this day. Halftime, Represent, NY State of Mind....those were the norm for that timeperiod....just not at that level that Nas came with. BIGs concepts were not completely original either but the combination of songs on those discs, the level of epicness of the presentation, the unique yet effortless delivery and twist that BIG put on those tracks...for some reason it struck a chord differently. It was more immitatable, I guess.
Jay for instance...he sampled Illmatic on Reasonable Doubt....but the music sounded nothing like Illmatic. But an Excuse Me Miss or a Still Not a Player....thats all BIG right there.
