COLLEGE LIFE...

I wish I could go back to my freshman year. So many good memories +things I should have done differently

As for shoes, going to class isn't about dressing up. You won't want to wear your best sneakers because that's a lot of mileage on them whenwalking on campus every day. You can still wear your nicer shoes for weekend activities.

Dress shoes? How often will there be an occasion in college that requires that?

AHHH....College....I'm 3 months away from being done! Looking forward to it.

Enjoy your first year and make sure not to get put on ACADEMIC PROBATION! lol

dorm life was tight. only did it for one year though. now livin in a single for my last year of college

I have been somewhat hard on college, from a financial/investment standpoint, it is being oversold, it is exploding in costs and the returns are diminishing. However, there is a lot about college that I and other grads/students take for granted. In college we meet new people, learn new ideas and in many cases getknowledge that cannot be learned on the street.

Many of us would be far more provincial without college. With going to college, we would be much more likely to only know about and know people from ourimmediate area and those living a similar type of life. College also does make you aware of possibilities that we may not have considered or even knew existed. Finally, there are many jobs where it is about what you know or at the very least, it is not "all about who you know." Good luck practicing law ormedicine or designing a bridge that will not collapse, all on your street smarts and ability to network.

I think my dorm requires you to have bunk beds... so which one should i pick if i get there first, top or bottom?

bottom, easier to get out of and smash on

The realest tip I can give to any college student is treat college like a 9-5/40 a week work week. That basically means you put your head into school 8 hoursper day from 9-5. I did this at Northwestern, school was a breeze, and I had nights off to do things. You're obviously going to pick this up come finaltimes, but needless to say, I graduated with a fine GPA.

On campus interviews? Final presentations? Banquets? Award ceremonies? Career fairs?

My advice to freshmen: Hit the books. All that social !%%% will come, but it shouldn't be a focus. You can be a nerd today, an attorney, doctor, investmentbanker, manager, etc. tomorrow. Or be the life of the party today, and the dead end job (or no job) tomorrow. Of course there is a way to go about this. Incollege and life really, don't work hard....work smart. So you can actually have time to go parties and still get good grades. There's no reason tostudy 8 hours for an exam when you have all the old exams and the professor never changes them.

It's much easier to party when you're riding on a nice 3.5 in your upper classman years then having to switch to an easier major and digging yourselfout of the "2-hole".

Unless you want to be this character:

"Yo I graduated from college (2.5 in Sports Management), and didn't get a job. College is overrated!!!!!".
I'll see some of you guys making that post in 4 years. Bet my bonus check on it.

Don't listen to this. You'll most likely need a pair of dress shoes as well as one pair of slacks and a nice shirt.

Homie do NOT get classes at night! I had a 7-9:30 pm class one night a week and it was boring. You'll miss some stuff happening on campus by having class at night. Try to get your classes between 10-3, because you won't be up too early or have class too late. Another big don't is, don't take all of your classes on one day, balance them out equally everyday. I made that mistake last semester by having 6 classes on M & W, and 5 on Friday.
WHAT THE HELL???????????????
am I trippin or what but you had 11 classes dog?

I had 5 and ppl were pushing it with 6, but 12???????

^ where did u get 12?

and i read all the text on page 3 lol
He said he had 6 on M/W and 5 on other days
but you said 12, whatever though,

Dude was saying he had SIX (6) total classes and he took them all MWF with all being MW and five of six (5/6) being on F.

*ALL YOU DUDES WORRIED ABOUT HOW MANY SHOES YOU SHOULD BRING*

and i easily fit 12 shoes in their boxes, and 8 other pairs of random kicks with plenty of room to spare

I would actually say moreso than just studying your %$% off, it's more important to network your %$% off.

My biggest problem right now is that I have about zero connections made from college to help me land a good job somewhere, because a decent resume alonedoesn't cut it anymore guys. Don't stress about getting an A- versus a B+, stress about making solid connections you can goto later on down the roadand rely on to help you out.

This doesn't mean you waste time making friends with loser party people - most of these idiots will go nowhere in life except rehab or jail. Besides, they're always there to party whenever you finish doing the important things. No need to cater to them until you've gotten your work for the day done.

So the biggest thing you need to do is join clubs, participate in events within those clubs and within other things that interest you and maybe even a fewthings that don't interest you but that you see as a good way to increase your network, and make sure to get contact information with all these peopleyou'll be meeting.

It may seem nerdy or even a little too outgoing for you, but I promise you that when it comes time to go searching for a nice job or a good reference -you're going to be glad you have a nice list of people in prominent positions (deans, professors, grad students, fellow undergrads, local business owners, etc) with lots of connections and a spot in their minds/hearts for you.

Trust me on this guys.. be cool with everyone you meet, you never know who's going to be able to help you out someday if you were good to them one time inthe past. Be aggressive, be appreciative, and when that's done, make sure you take time to have some fun.

To me - college was like summer camp in a lot of ways... only, i was a commuter so I missed out on much of the fun of this "summer camp".

The important thing to realize is that it's not going to last forever - and you can be sent home if you don't take care of your responsibilitiesfirst.. and as i said, don't forget to always be networking!

First, you should of put this in the NorCal thread to get better responses relating to SFstate...because SFstate isn't like every other college throughoutthe nation. Second, you shouldn't have moved into the wack over priced Villas/Park Merced, your a freshmen you should of dormed in Maryward or the othertwo dorm buildings. Since you can't change any of that... After attending SFstate for the last four years all I really got to say to you is make the mostof it. This can sound pretty cliche, but the way you approach college will either make or break that "college life." Don't be afraid to meet newpeople and to network. I had a friend who was a loner throughout his freshmen year of college, and then he finally decided to join some group on campus and nowhe has a close group of friends he can call his own for now on. Go to class, don't be lazy. Your here for a reason. Trust me, I learned the hard way mysophomore year. All I did was drink and burned everyday(the villas got some decent trees if you know the right people btw) and ended up not going to classwhich left me to either withdrawal or fail. And with all these talks about budget cuts, it's going to be HELLA hard to repeat ANY class... Basically justtry to have fun, don't be shy, wrap it up, and go to class. If you got anymore questions about SFstate, feel free to inbox me.
