Computer P.S.A. (helpful programs, apps, and tips)

anyone know how to get rid of this spyware called surf sidekick 3? i tried adaware and spybot already but i couldn't fix it.

Quick question to you cat............I got 2 laptops and a desktop...desktop is hooked up to the cable modem then I have a netgear router (super G) running as well. One laptop works fine 24/7 off the router(both laptops have wireless built in).

The other laptop stays connected to the wireless router maybe 30-45mins then it says limited or no connectivity, then I have to restart the laptop to get the connection again.

What could be cause the connection to drop like that all the time??

Question:

On my friends myspace someone posted a wmv video but it won't play. In the error details it states: The source filter for this file could not be loaded. However someone else posted a wmv video and it plays.

I was able to view the video on other computers, so im guessing something is just wrong with mine.

what can i do to fix/view it?

thanks.

man that CC cleaner is a wonder. thanks.

Nick, you are the man for sure. I did the tweakin thanks.

lastly,

i've been running 60 processes, but I think McAfee security runs 10 alone by itself. I WILL NOT UNINSTALL MCAFEE, it's the corporate version and they update their virus definitions everyday, it's the best I've ever used, norton is garbage and still got infected by trojans.

can anyone tell me a program that tells me which processes are worthless on my system?

thanks.

KTOWN,
I don't know of any program, but I usually just google the process, using the entire name (including extension). There are plenty of process library sites out there, but the reason I google is that a lot of them aren't too complete.

As far as your 10 McAfee, I would imagine that you will have to have all of them to keep the program running and updating correctly. That has been a complaint of McAfee by some people over the last couple of years, that it it turning into a resource hog which runs a lot of processes, much like Norton.

Hey guys, just a little microsoft word question...

I would like for a picture to be my background---meaning I'd like to write over the picture.

I've been trying to format the picture as "behind text" but it doesnt do it at all...it still appears as on top of the text so everything moves down

How do I fix this?

snackworm,
thanks, I do the same thing, the thing is how do I configure my taskwindow so that the processes I don't need don't show up again period?

I've deleted the ones that are useless, etc,
but I want to get down to like 50 processes.

for k-town and the others looking to cut down # of open processes, this was originally posted by compaqp5280 earlier in this thread
The link is really helpful so you don't disable important processes. This tip cut my running processes by 2/3, and everything works great.

Also, there are services that are uneeded that you can disable, (or set to manual instead of automatic)
Run(in start menu) "services.msc". To the right there are the list of services. WARNING- SOME SERVICES ARE NEEDED BY XP TO OPERATE!!!!!!!!!! USE AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION!!!!!!!!!!!!.
this is a website that will help guide you on what to disable. I did it last week and it works like a charm.

I'm having some mouse problems.....

Sometimes, it'll double-click even though I only single-click. It also doesn't move as smoothly (this pisses me off in CS >:

)

Is it my mouse or my computer?

Most likely the mouse. Try going in to Control Panel > Mouse Settings.

You might be able to mess with those and get a little better response.
I would recommend getting a laser mouse. It is a lot smoother and more responsive,
especiall for gamers. You can find wired ones for next to nothing these days.

Not sure if this belongs here, but it's kinda comp. related. Is this legit? I got this in my spam folder today:

So, last night I was having problems with my WiFi connection (not getting a connection at all).

I know the problem isn't with the cable modem, because I can hard wire to my computer, even through the Wireless router I use.

My computer recognizes the card is plugged into my PCMCIA slot, but it's not picking up any networks in my apartment building, and normally it sees like 2-3.

Any advice? Is my card dead? I've tried to reset every piece in the chain (like the PC, router and modem).

Nice post and here's my 2 cents

Kaspersky and NOD32 are rated #1 antivirus for their ability to get most viruses and some others can't...Kaspersky is for you if your computer is top notch with high memory, but if your computer is somewhat a lil slow like mines, NOD32 is for you...The scan times for NOD32 are really fast! If you need these PM for info.

Also for spyware you should get Webroot's Spysweeper! It gets all the spyware others don't and is voted #1 spyware remover!

Alright first off, this morning i downloaded a program on my computer from limewire, i unzipped it and what not and one file came up unzipped, it was called "Set-Up" and had a disc on it as the picture.

Every since i clicked on it, everything has been going nuts, i keep getting pop-ups, even when im not using the internet.

I scanned my computer with these 3 programs :
Ad-Aware
Xoft-Spy
& SpyBot

Even though my computer was scanned with these programs i still have problems with these pop-ups on my computer.

When i scan my computer again with Ad-Aware it tells me each and everytime--even when i get rid of the viruses that i still have this virus called "adware" on my computer, & that i have about 3 of them. Also when im done with the scan it says i cannot remove some viruses because i need to restart my computer, however when i do so, nothing gets scanned and nothing changes.

However with the other virus programs they do not tell me i have any harmful viruses on my computer.

Whenever i get pop ups, i always get this link :
where it says adware.com and i also get casino pop ups...

So my question is, how would i go about deleting this major virus off of my computer forever ? The programs arent enough to get rid of this "adware" virus, so what can i do ?
Any help would be appreciated!

^ Disconnect from the internet and run all of those programs in safe mode. That should get rid of them.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it still hasnt gotten rid of the viruses.

Any other tricks?

Wassap guys question: So I'm runnin AOL Security Center, but the safety status is poor because a previous version of Norton is installed. I've removed the program, searched for files and even took as much out of the registry as I can but it still says that it is on my computer. How can I remove Norton once and for all?
