yea its competition but not a sport....

time to revisit the old sig.

"nascar and poker ARE NOT SPORTS!!!"

nothing that involves a motor is a sport. nothing.

Let's see if any of yall can sit inside a car like that go at those speeds

Theres alot of things I dont want to do that doesnt make them a sport. A sport needs to require some type of athletic ability.

Can't believe i'm defending Nascar, but...

...driving a Nascar racecar is no easy task. Takes a huge toll on the body. There are obvious factors that determines winners and losers...driving,engineering, strategy, team play, etc. so I guess it's a "sport".

BTW, Nascar sucks lol. Everytime I see it on TV, I groan.

I hate watching racing on tv.

I'd rather watch paint dry than watch it.

Nascar is not really a sport that should be watched on a TV, sort of like Hockey. Its best when you're there in person its pretty

But if you guys want to get technical with the term "sport", not its not an actual sport but it IS a skilled team competition (golf is anotherexample of a skilled competition, you don't have to be athletic obviously).

drag racing is not that boring due to the rediculous speeds attained over such a short distance.
Nascar has to be the most boring motorsport of all. Just going around an oval track 500 times. The only excitement is when someone puts it in the wall andthere is a big crash. F1 is much more enjoyable and even then that can get pretty dull at times.

people always say 'nascar is difficult to do so it's a sport'

. so is brain surgery, knitting, hopping on one foot for hours....

a sport is competion based and rooted in pure physical prowess.

physical athleticism must the key force in the competion.

in motor competition that force is the vehicle's engine. a driver directs the vehicle but the speed is provided by the vehicle.

put a brick on a gas pedal and a car will move.

put a brick on a ball, or bat or golf club or hockey stick, and well it will sit there because those items are entirely dependant on the athlete.

You don't need physical athleticism to be considered a sport, sport is not as literal a term anymore.

Basketball, football, hockey, tennis.....those are real sports to me.

Baseball is a sport but its more dependent on skill, very few positions require athletic ability (ie 3rd base, CF, SS, etc)....you can be a fat $@% and be agreat pitcher/catcher/1st baseman/etc, but that doesn't mean that its NOT a sport.

Golf is not a TRUE sport in the sense but its just another one of those skilled competitions, same with Nascar.

ESPN pretty much just shows anything that has to do with competitions, shoot even the Spelling Bee Tournaments are showcased.

You're right; putting a brick on a ball or a bat won't do anything. Putting a brick on a gas pedal will move the car...right into a wall.

The word "sport" is used loosely. In Nascar, there's a winner, a loser, and requires some sort of physical exertion. Anyone can shoot a ball, swing a golfclub, or drive a car, but not everyone can do it at a high level. It takes training and natural ability (for example, just like tall, lean, andathletic people make good basketball players, people who are shorter and lighter with good strength and endurance make good racecar drivers...or jockeys...orgymnasts). Some can barely control a car going at 70mph, but Nascar drivers go at nearly triple that speed while being inches away from another car. Theparticipants put themselves in great physical danger, just like a football or hockey player does. We've witnessed the greatest driver of our time dieduring a race and we've seen young rookies being bid on by endorsees just like LeBron James was.

Again, in no way am I supporting Nascar because I honestly think it's stupid, but it's still a sport.

i would like to see a lot of you hit a golf ball 200 yards.....

or be on the PGA and hit it 300

the entire point is that the car will move without a human actively handling it.

i think a sport should have both an offense and defense. i think most of you guys will agree if not all. and please don't say golf's terrain is thedefense. no, you need to be able to both play defense and offense.

Ok and since when is that necessary and sufficient to be a sport? I am not disagreeing with you I am just pointing out the problem with this debate. Referringto a dictionary to solve this problem is also not a good solution because as a society we have seemed to define sports as anything where there is competition(a winner and a loser) and some exertion of dexterity (PHYSICAL AND MENTAL).

So this begs the question...what is a sport? No one knows. but if you use the word sport the way society uses the word sport then motorsports most definetly asport. If you create your own definition that has different stipulations then you can make anything a sport and vice versa. That slope is very slippery.

This is the evolution of language by humans great isnt it? /rant
