Word, I take a lot of pictures and the file format (RAW) is huge. I used to think my 500 GB harddrive would be sufficient but I had to add a 1 TB external.

Depends on what you're saving.
I have a 250 gb external drive. When I was just putting music on it, it was fine.
Once I started downloading movies, I was out shopping for a new drive within the month.

im good with 500 GB. Don't download music, movies, etc much. I run a 256 GB ssd for my main drive and another 256 gb for my other drive. Have it in raid config set to 128 kb stripe.
