NYC bans employment drug screenings for Marijuana

Well if u were drinking an hour before
Ur interview
Even though I know it’s unlikely
But isn’t that the same thing
Mind u I’m not for it or against it
Company should be able to choose imo
But just tryna play devils advocate
It’s not comparable in the least bit honestly. Let’s also not forget WHY weed is looked at as “for bad people” while drinking is “ok”.

But if we being real weed is an illegal substance
Depending on the city/state
But again
I just think companies should have the right to choose either
What they gonna look for
When they test for pre employment

Would we say that a teacher that also does porn on the side is cool/ok?

to be honest, I could care less what a teacher is doing on they personal time considering it doesn't impact the classroom and my child's learning experience
But there's been an few teachers fired for rapping in their spare time and some have been fired for strippin' and shootin' flicks so this question already exists

I think now, more than any other time in US history, companies simply don't want to ve publicly shamed

When has it been easier for an everyday person to be heard by a company? Now getting a company's attention is extremely easy and works fast. Company's have never wanted to be involved with negativity. When Tiger got in his situation he was dropped by plenty of companies cause they didn't want to be associated with him and his issues. It's just now that same power is in the regular person's hands and not just celebrities

I agree
But if I drink off the clock
Is it still ok for me to clock in still drunk???

No. But do you get piss tested for alcohol?
Even tho both weed and drink are controlled substances only weed is demonized and treated like people can't use it and still function normally

Not, not at my current job. It would land me in jail.

When I was a cook sure, we’d get drunk at work.

Every job is different, if you’re in the office or a safety sensitive job I’d say showing up to work drunk is a no go.

I think I could technically have a drink or two during the day in my office (not actually in my office but during my work day) and it be cool but I couldn't be drunk

I've smelled dudes walk in smellin' like gas from lunch and considering they still here it ain't effect they job

I need someone to find Ninjahood so we can make sense of all this

Where is Ninja??

if a teacher wants to strip to make extra money you can’t tell her anything. She’s off the clock.

I would even add make XXX movies. It's legal. Off the clock. He/she aren't using school resources to make the films.

If you question someone's morality about something legal, it opens up a huge can of worms.

Jimmy can go to the casino to smoke, drink and gamble and keep his job but I can't bust it open on camera? Nah. That's more of the US being repressed sexually than anything.

It’s not even a fair comparison because the question was made with the notion that people know what said person was doing off the clock. I’m sure I can speak for a LOT of people when I say who I am at home isn’t the standard at work. I’m not even talking about when I’m out with the fam or fellas either. That’s a whole different beast

So, if said teacher did his/her thing and kept it to his/her own self then there is no problem. But again, bad comparison

For example people here can talk all day about going home to drink a bottle of wine or have a couple of beers and it's cool. Or of course go outside and have multiple cigarette breaks and it's "normal". But if somebody was to bring up smoking weed they'd get looked at much differently even though you can be just as irresponsible with both the aforementioned items

Dude I work with got denied life insurance for weed. In MA too. Although I think the insurance company was based in the midwest. But it shouldn't matter I think? I don't know.

To be denied outright, is ridiculous. If you smoke cigarettes you can get insurance you just gotta pay more. At my job it's an additional $500/year if you are tabacco smoker.
That's wild

Be careful how much control over your life outside of the job that you’re willing to give up. It’s a slippery *** slope. What I do off the clock has no holding on my work on the clock, and if it does and it’s noticeable, you deal with it then.

It’s about to be legalized recreationally. If y’all are cool with it still determining whether or not a place will hire you, we may as well test people to ensure they never drink alcohol.

I’ve said this before in other threads and I’ll say it again here. Housewife on antidepressants, pain pill popping, sleep meds, Xanax, mood stabilizers, ALL fine and legal. Weed = jail time. There’s a reason for that

Has a lot to do with the ‘reefer madness’ nonsense they seem to still be peddling:

Not for you to agree or disagree. Many people use marijuana for self diagnosed mental medical purposes they don’t want to talk about or actually face head on not just for fun.

I think the employer should have the right to screen the employees they hire for drug use. If I'm hiring I want to be paying for smart, responsible, employees in good health.
It's not that I care what you do in your personal life. I think marijuana and most other drugs should be legalized everywhere BUT...

First and foremost, in my experience absenteeism is much higher in drug users than non-drug users. A drug user in a state that hasn't decriminalized it has little respect for rules and regulations that I may need them to follow. High functioning or not marijuana use is an impairment for most users. Decision making is affected. And finally whatever mentally or emotionally damaging ailments you have at home that lead you to use drugs isn't necessarily what I want to invite into my workplace. If the ailment is some actual physical health issue... I'd rather hire the next healthy man anyway. Not trying to have you out half the week on FMLA protected absence.

If you believe you are just as valuable as Richard Branson after your morning wake and bake then start your own company or freelance work. I'm hiring hourly employees. I need them to be almost machine like in consistancy. Being a free thinker is going to disrupt the environment I'm creating. In some positions that's useful. Maybe I won't screen those. But for most it's not.

Just because you're a human being with needs doesn't mean the job market has to be altruistic and look out for you. Just business. Nothing personal.
