Cards welcome back Ludwick, Ankiel

By Matthew Leach / MLB.com

MILWAUKEE -- A scuffling offensive team gets one of its biggest weapons back on Friday night, and not a day too soon.

Slugger Ryan Ludwick is scheduled to be activated from the disabled list for the Cardinals' series opener against the Giants in San Francisco. Ludwick has been sidelined with a right hamstring strain, and in his absence, the Redbirds haven't done much offensively.

Ludwick sustained the injury in the second inning of the Cards' May 12 loss to Pittsburgh. Starting with that game, the Redbirds scored 45 runs in 15 games, an average of exactly three runs per contest.

They've also been doing without Rick Ankiel for nearly all of that time. Ankiel was on the disabled list due to the injuries he sustained in a May 4 crash with the Busch Stadium wall. He came back for one game, experienced some additional right shoulder soreness, and missed the Cards' entire series in Milwaukee.

Ankiel is expected to be back in the lineup on Friday as well, adding two of the team's most potent power producers back to the batting order.

It's Ludwick in particular who's been missed in the batting order, though. Ankiel is off to something of a slow start this year, whereas Ludwick already had eight home runs in 30 games and is slugging .538.

"Ludwick's a quality producer, so it's got to be better," manager Tony La Russa said.

The Cardinals have continued to hold their own in the absence of their two sluggers, owing to some fine pitching and defense in recent days. But facing the Giants' Matt Cain at the extremely pitcher-friendly AT&T Park, any boost to the offense will be a welcome one.

Finally.......Out pitching has been holding steady since Carp came back and the relief pitching has been good also.

Hopefully now we can get more run support that we have been getting the last few weeks.

Oh........Glaus is never coming back, they might as well forget about it.

We're coming for the Cubbies tonight.

Bout to give Arog and TylerDub nightmares again.

About damn time we beat these damn Dodgers. I swear I hate them, respect, but hate mightily. We should've won last night too if we had a major leagueoffense. Let's go on a damn winning streak damn it !!!!

Derrick Lee is making me lower his likeability status by every at bat.

I was listening to a little Cubs Central sportsradio talk and it seems like the majority of Cubs fans again, are ripping at Hendry for trading DeRosa andletting go of Wood. Man this guy can't win if he tries lol. But he does make some questionable moves.

Votto to DL, about damn time. This should have happend about a month ago when he first started going through all these issues. There is somethin seriouslywrong with him.

Pitching Shuts L.A. Down Again
Cubs blank Dodgers 7-0

Ryan Dempster won for only the second time in his last five starts, thanks to MikeFontenot and Reed Johnson, as the Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-0Saturday, their second straight victory over baseball's best team.

A season-high 41,153 fans saw the nationally televised game at Wrigley Field.

Fontenot had a double and a triple and Johnson RBIs from a bunt single and a home run.

Dempster gave up just two hits through the first five innings and both came with two outs. He also struck out the side in the third inning.

Fontenot got the Cubs on the board in the second inning off lefty starter Eric Stults, who came into the game with a 4-1 record but was bothered by a sorethumb. Fontenot's two-out double off the wall in right-center scored Johnson, who had walked and stolen second.

Johnson drove in another run in the third inning, when his perfect two-out bunt scored Ryan Theriot from third. Theriotreached base after being hit by a pitch.

The Cubs added two more in the fourth inning while knocking out Stults. Fontenot tripled home Bobby Scales, who had started the inning with a walk, andFontenot scored on Theriot's single.

With reliever Jeff Weaver having trouble finding the plate, the Cubs increased their lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning.Following a Milton Bradley single and Derrek Lee's double, Weaver walked the next two batters, with Geovany Soto getting an RBI. The second run scored on Scales' double-play grounder.

Johnson's solo homer in the seventh made it 7-0.

Sean Marshall (3-3) will oppose the Dodgers' Eric Milton (1-0) in Sunday'sseries finale, an ESPN telecast at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, Dempster went eight strong innings, allowing three hits and just one walk.
