oh its "your" team now

Burton should've made the team over Ondrusek. Dusty Baker should be the first coach fired this year in the ML.

Pujols, Holliday drive in key runs for St. Louis

CINCINNATI -- Adam Wainwright was on his way to what would have been a most unfair no-decision. And then justice prevailed, in the form of Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday.

Big hits by the Cardinals' two biggest hitters keyed a four-run seventh inning, sending Wainwright and St. Louis to a 6-3 win over the Reds at Great American Ball Park on Wednesday night. The Cardinals improved to 2-0 on the young season, the fifth time since 1998 that they have won their first two games.

As the seventh inning dawned, Wainwright had been brilliant for all but two batters. Yet that very brief lapse had him and his club in jeopardy. Wainwright walked leadoff man Drew Stubbs with one out in the sixth, then permitted a two-run homer to Orlando Cabrera. The runs were the only blemishes on his otherwise outstanding game, but with only two runs from his offense, it looked like enough to be a problem.

"I was just upset that I walked Stubbs," Wainwright said. "It's one thing to give up a hit to a guy, and another thing to bring the tying run up because of a walk. If he's going to hit that pitch out, a pitch I executed just like I planned to, you check your scouting report and you check your execution. The walk is really what killed me.

"I didn't hold my head down. I knew that we were going to come back and score, and I also knew that I was throwing the ball great. I was confident."

He was right.

Facing left-handed reliever Daniel Ray Herrera, lefty-swinging Skip Schumaker led off the seventh with a single -- his first hit of the season. Brendan Ryan drew a walk to bring up Pujols, who lined a hard single into left center to break the tie. Holliday followed with a double to center field that scored two runs, giving the Cards their biggest lead of the game. A run-scoring single from David Freese, his second of the game, made it 6-2.

"That's what we hope as an offense to do," Holliday said. "Adam pitched so well and then gave up a homer to tie it. As an offense, you're looking to respond, to try to get him the lead back. He was pitching so well you felt like it could have been one of those games where he pitched nine innings. When you've got pitchers like that, you're just trying to get the lead back. Tie some hits together and give him a cushion."

Ryan was more succinct.

"Love it," he said. "That's more crushing than people know. That's super defeating. It's exhausting for them, I'd imagine."

RBI singles from Freese and Ryan Ludwick had put the Cardinals up, 2-0, after 2 1/2 innings. Wainwright cruised for much of the game, retiring nine consecutive batters from the third into the sixth, before getting into some trouble. He allowed a walk to Stubbs and Cabrera's two-run homer before settling in to finish his outing with five straight outs.

Wainwright said that even the home run wasn't that big a mistake. He was pleased with where he put the pitch to the Reds' shortstop, a fastball in off the plate. Cabrera just did a good job hitting it, he argued.

With or without the home run, it was an excellent showing from Wainwright, and an improvement over how he pitched both in Spring Training and in the early going in the 2009 season. Wainwright finished April of last year with a 3-0 record and a 2.76 ERA, and plenty of frustration with how he was throwing. He issued 18 walks in his first five starts last year.

In his mind, he's already off to a better start.

"Night and day," he said. "It's not even close. This is how I was feeling [late] last year. This is how I pitched [late] last year. Commanding both sides of the plate with all my pitches and letting my defense work. They hit some balls hard but I was able to keep them off base. I'm just going to take it one step at a time and continue to grind, stay on top of my mechanics, stay on top of my delivery."

Brad Penny on the mound for us today; I am skeptical of this guy. Offense needs to score runs early and try not to leave runners on base.[/h3]

Freakin Pirates, amazing

This is our annual "hey guys, we're pirates fans" exchange in this thread.

Anyways... 2-0... maybe this is the year?

I will say this... i like our outfield this year a lot.  Milledge is a smart player who works his !@* off, Jones finally adds some pop in the lineup, and Cutch is Cutch.  I also still really like Doumit.

Unfortunately, we still only have 2 starters I think are worth a damn and a bullpen that's shakey.  But I guess we're getting there...

I never have a reason to stick around, I still watch and listen to many games in the division with the Pirates and Reds but again nothing worthy to post. I do hope that the comment on Brantley being bad was a joke. Cowboy is hilarious, his commentary has me dyin especially late in games after when he has some drinks

I like Brantley too

Jonny with the walk off , hell of a game by Bronson today, Penny was solid too.

Walkoff. I still can't stand Dusty Baker though. His managing of the pitching staff irks me.
