Is there anything wrong with being a selfish person?

I had a conversation yesterday with someone who was basically telling me that we don't live in this world alone and we should help out people in our lives whenever we can.

I want to emphasize whenever you can because im not talking about going too far out of your way or putting yourself in a bad situation but general favors.

Part of my problem with it is people become dependent on having help and they never fix whatever issue is causing them to need help.

For instance the guy who always asks to borrow money but pays u back when he gets paid. You do it the first time but then its an every month thing and your really not helping him learn how to budget his money.

My rule is if I can help you without causing any kind of detriment to myself, I most certainly will.

The people I dislike the most are the people who go far beyond the call of duty, doing all kinds of things to help someone when nobody asked them. Then they get mad when someone is not about mess up their position to help them out in return. I got a few people in my family like that.

You can only extend your hand so much. If they aren't doing anything to really help themselves, then that's on them. Lending people money is the absolute worst.

This is the wrong place to ask. Bunch of closet and open socialist on here. They vilify me daily for caring about myself before worrying about others.

But no OP there is nothing wrong with being selfish, unless you the type to always ask favors from others.

You gottta get yours first before you give to others.

This is one of my thought processes actually

I will specifically not ask people for favors that way when they need one i don't feel bad saying no.

And id rather not make this a religion thread so i wont go into the God talk.

take care of your own and you are good with me. i wouldn't think you were selfish. 

imo you don't have to help out strangers to be considered unselfish

I've seen 40 plus year old people come into AA miserable, and just Physically beat the F up....

They get some time sober, a job, and then they throw a tantrum when someone asks them for a c****rette.... LOL!!!

Its the coolest thing for me to witness, because you can see a persons true colors

I'll do anything for anyone in my circle of friends. I'll do what I can for anyone else. But I can spot bs from a mile away.
