couple of questions-

is the Canon 85mm 1.8 the best prime lens i could buy in the $350-400 price range?

also, is the Canon 70-300mm a good purchase at $400 or should i continue to save up for a 70-200?

I would suggest the Canon 50mm f/1.4 which fits quite nicely into your price range at $369 from B&H. I have both lenses and I just prefer the 50mm. However, if you're set on the 85mm focal length, then go for it.

For those two lenses, you have to ask yourself which is more important, focal length or aperture? While the 70-200mm can obviously cover a larger distance, it won't be too ideal for low-light situations because the aperture can only go as wide as f/4 at 70mm and f/5.6 at 300mm. The 70-200mm is 2.8 all around which is great for night shooting and it also makes for a great portrait lens because you're able to achieve a shallow depth of field at f/2.8. My advice? Just save up for the 70-200. An alternative, is to get the 70-200 f/4. It's a little cheaper than the f/2.8 but it's still a great lens. It won't have the same nighttime performance as the f/2.8 but at least you won't have to worry about the maximum aperture decreasing when you zoom in (as you would with the 70-300). Hope that helped!

Skip the 70-300.  Go with the 55-250.  Grab it off of eBay for about $250 new.  Just make sure the seller includes receipt and warranty card.

This actually ONLY works for an 8x10 collage, not an 8x10 print... If you try to do a single photo it adds a border to the photo.. But it works, thanks for the heads up!

i'm new to this game and i just copped on a point n shoot canon sd3500. can anyone school me on any hints, tricks, and tips when taking photos. i'm not sure if i can i get the same effect as you guys knowing that most of these pics on this thread come from a D/SLR
