Just noticed. Someone care to explain? Last time I check, New Orleans are in the east coast.

they used to be in the East, remember they played D-Wade and the Heat in the playoffs his rookie season.

but when they made the Bobcats they had to even out the conferences, so they moved them to the SW division in the West

I believe it's cuz when the Bobcats were added to the league and The Hornets wanted to move, they were put there as a stipulation of their move.

why are the detroit red wings in the western conference in hockey...always baffled me...

Then shouldnt they rename the conferences to American and National conferences to make more sense?

pretty dumb imo.......... the nba never thinks when deciding things... I would have gave charlotte the hornets name back and named them the new orleans blues

a little off topic but, why are only the UTAH Jazz and Indiana pacer teams that are not city teams? Why are they consider state teams?

dunno the reason for the Utah Jazz name, but...
Tinkham said the "Pacers" decision was an easy one, but the real debate was whether the team should be called the Indiana Pacers or the Indianapolis Pacers. Since one of the original ideas for the team was to have it playing throughout the state with its base in Indianapolis, the official team name became the Indiana Pacers.

New Orleans isn't on the East Coast. It's on the Gulf of Mexico. The only part of the Gulf that could be considered East Coast is Florida citieslike Tampa and Cape Coral.

Last time I checked, no Eastern Conference teams in the NBA are located west of the New Orleans. So why do you thinkNew Orleans should logically be part of the Eastern Conference? Which NBA team would you switch to accommodate that?

Generally speaking, the Mississippi River divides the US into East and West. New Orleans and Memphis are both port cities directly on the Mississippi River.Because there are already 15 NBA cities located east of New Orleans and Memphis, it makes sense to include them in the Western Conference if you want bothconferences to have the same number of teams.

They moved to Salt Lake City from New Orleans.

no, i meant why they called it "Utah Jazz" instead of "Salt Lake City Jazz" after the move.

but now that i say it to myself, "Utah Jazz" obviously sounds better.

How bad are you at geography where you're arguing that New Orleans is on the East Coast?

Got damn....
