Yao Ming or Dwight Howard? Who would you take starting a franchise.

i want a center not a 7'6 guard

If I'm picking now it would definitely be Dwight Howard. I mean the guy has a good 10+ seasons left easily. He hasn't even reached his prime yet. Iwould much rather have Yao on a team looking to win a championship immediately though or if Yao was Dwight's age I would take him. I'm taking thequestion as is (STARTING a franchise), so more than likely Yao only has a good 4-5 years left in him. By the time my franchise starts to become good, he willbe ready to retire.

I'm saying...

Dwight Howard is younger, a better rebounder, and a better defender. That is it. Yao is the most polished all-around center in the league.

What's the upside of Dwight Howard anyways? Is that synonymous with potential? I don't see D12 averaging 20 boards or scoring that much more. Will helearn to become more efficient of an offensive player? Probably. I definitely don't see him having a consistent mid-range jumper because he's nevershown ANY flashes of having anything resembling one.

dwight howard is one dimensional. almost ALL his points are garbage buckets within less than a foot from the basket: put back dunks, alley-oops, penetration...

if u ask dwight howard to take his man one on one, he'll have a hard time scoring on his opponent. dwight is pretty much ben wallace with a slightly betterjumpshot but with explosive hops.

thats the thing he is a center not a guard if you want a traditional center like a shaq who was a dominant force you need dwight then you assemblea team around him like the lakers 00-02 and you have yourselves a dynasty

It really depends what type of franchise you want to build.

With Dwight, the possibilities are endless. You can surround him with shooters, uptempo guys, role players where Dwight is the focus of the offense, etc. He's that athletic.

With Yao, it's basically the typical elite big man formula. A big man, a wing, and a bunch of role players who can shoot.

I'd take Yao though since he can knock down the j and he's not a liabilty come crunch time. What's the point if you can't have your C in incritical moments?

Bottomline though, you should take Yao. Mainly because you can run the pick and roll

what are you serious
nobody plays dh one on one they always double teaming him cause he can take a man off the dribble and throw it down they throat

^See, the thing is, Shaq actually had post moves. The only thing Dwight and Shaq have in common is their horrid free throw shooting. Yao also has post moves inaddition to his ability to knock down the mid-range jumper. Don't get me wrong though.... I love Dwight. I just don't think he has the type of skillsit takes to command a double team.

shaq wasnt a good free throw shooter either and look how many rings he got yall must dont wanna build a winning franchise

newsflash scott. d12 is not shaq

^Shaq also had Kobe and scored almost 30 points per game during those championship years. Like dude said on the last page, what's the use of having acenter that is a liability when it's crunch time.

thats what im sayin you build your team around dwight and you will have a dynasty like the lakers did

the rockets have tried that and so far it hasnt worked out

you guys act as if dwight has reached his limit he hasnt he even scratched the surface

now we have seen eveything yao has he has reached his potential

The problem with building a franchise around Dwight Howard was on display tonight in the game. The Magic were CRUSHING and Howard was a focal point for theoffense. Coming down the stretch, he was basically invisible. Because he is horrendous from the free throw line, he cant have the ball. The Celtics were ableto come back from a huge hole and almost steal back the game. This happened in round one as well.

Dwight needs to be complimented with another superstar, the player that can take over down the stretch and win games. As much of a beast as Dwight Howard is,if he is the best player on the team, that team will ultimately fall short in the playoffs. A team CAN NOT have their best player COMPLETELY taken out of theoffensive equation for most of the 4th quarter. The only reason I would buy anyone saying Howard is strictly due to age and the hopes of improvement.

But for the purposes of trying to win in the immediate future, I would build my team around Yao.....and it really wasnt that hard of a decision.
