40k salary for a job you like or 100k for a job you don't like?

Man, I make $40K RIGHT NOW. If I wasn't paying out the **** for student loans, I'd be balling so hard yo.

Of course $100K would be even better. :pimp:

my buddy moved back to dallas. they let him keep his bay area salary. cost of living/no taxes dude is back to balling

I know multiple college grads that's making 14k or under a year and they're still living so 40k is plenty enough to live

people defensive about lower waged income because they know skills pay the bills and they can't get someone to pay them, so they start saying stuff like, 'doing alright' and trying to 'reason' their way about and using 'happiness' to assuage themselves.  like I said, it's a compromise and it comes with sacrifice.  kids here just kids.  kids don't know about working MULTIPLE jobs to make ends meet.  guess people continuously fabricate stories..

time is money !

I can't live off 40k.
Mind I ask what you living off now?  Understand if you don't want to reveal your actual salary...

Not trying to single you out, MPL...But I am curious to vast majority in here stating they can't make it off 40K....How many of you guys actually making more than 50K?

Let me tell ya'll. I was making around 30k right out of college, a year later I was making 40k and let me tell you that is a big difference. If you can't live off 40k you doing something wrong. Now that I make sufficiently more than that, I still spend like I make 40.

for all yall talkin about "security" with a $100k salary, when society and the dollar collapses and we resort to bartering and trading, your money wont keep you warm at night unless you burn it...

^ putting your money in gold, silver and rice; huh?

I don't see "society" is going to collapse anytime soon; outside of some super extremely low probability event happening

1k to rent and utilities, another 500 to other bills like phone, cable and insurance. I got a kid too so yeah... I could do 40 if I moved to a studio and all that but I'm not about that struggle life now. I've been there many many years. I can't count every dollar I spend now. I'm so sick and tired of that life.

40k after taxes is nothing. 100k throws you in an even higher bracket and is almost not worth the headache regardless of job. Can i just be homeless?

got them gold bars stacked in the safe

I think it would be interesting to post where people live, what they made and what they think is comfortable living is. Obviously it would show that we are not all on the same page here. Of course people can live off $40K but what does that consist of and would that make you comfortable. I think given, a lot of people couldn't move to those areas where their dollars went farther and would rather live moderately in a high cost living area.

I think people that say they can't live off 40k just aren't resourceful enough or don't manage money well

^^^

The flip side of that though is if you do what you love the odds of you eventually working for yourself are that much higher :smokin

I have never met anyone who likes working 40 hours a week and getting paid a small amount of money

You think people who make 100k+ work "40 hours a week"?

Think again

A lot of y'all are wild short sighted. Am I the only one that looks at 40k as temporary? Y'all don't get raises/promotions?

****, the 100k is temporary too.

granted we have never met, but i've probably worked 40+ hrs in a week 3-4 times in the last 8 years. Most of the time i'm in at 8:30a and out the door at 5:00pm sharp. It may not be the norm, but there are definitely 100K+ jobs with 40 hr work weeks.

I make 6 figs. Actually, just filed my taxes and my gross was $120k. I don't love my job but I don't hate it either. My passion is not my work. My passion is what I do outside work which is spending time with my boys, volunteering at the church, and just providing for my family. Having disposable income while seeing my nest egg ain't bad either. My job enables me to do what I love. I don't work a min. more than 40 hours a week. I actually work less probably because I am so efficient.

Follow your dream or do something you love is a nice sound bite but it doesn't pay the bills. Sorry to burst some of your bubbles.

outside of the volunteering at church things we might be mirror images of each other.

ill play.

i live in LA county on the westside where its F.U expensive. Not quite SF or Manhattan expensive, but its up there. Its not about being resourceful or managing money. The math just doesnt work for me and my family to get by on $40K a year. I cant even afford a SFR here. I'm already tight on space in my condo with a 2nd kid on the way. My mortgage payment and HOA is a $2,600 a month. This is a fixed cost for me every month just to have a roof over my head. At $40K a year, that comes out to what... maybe $3K+/- a month? No chance I get by with $400 to cover food, utilities, etc... etc... no matter how conservative I get.
