What happened to Delonte West? Mental disorders are a scary thing

Was never a fan of his but did find it hilarious that he was smashing Bron's moms

America is still not ready to face it's problem with mental health issues.

Probably gonna take a Magic I have HIV press conference type announcement for to get any closer to a public discussion like Curry coming out telling everybody he's schizophrenic.

When did Curry say he was schizo?

Delonte is and always will be my dude... I loved him as a player and his interviews on Fox sports Net New England were always top notch ... But life is hard man... Especially when you live life depressed... It's awfully hard to live life when you don't want to... Money is a blessing for some, a curse for others... One of the few I legitimately hope get better...

After taxes and upkeep of expensive items bought, sure you could.

Exactly. 40% goes to taxes so thats 9.6 mil left, 1-2% goes to your agent, house for your parents lets say 1 mil, house for yourself 2 mil, cars, jewelry.............
It adds up fast. You need a constant stream of money to maintain that life, and his checks stopped coming in 3 years ago.

To be fair, 16 million is MORE than enough for him to live off of for the rest of his life. That's even after taxes and the agent cut.

The problem is the financial education piece. You hit the nail on the head...spending the money like you got a hole in your pocket will ultimately lead to going broke. It's maintaining a lifestyle that gets SO many athletes in trouble. A lot of these dudes come from nothing, so the first big check they get is recklessly spent...and then a pattern develops soon after.

I feel horrible for Delonte. He's a good dude but obviously is battling mental illness.

I was a bit ignorant to the severity of mental illness for a while until it hit my family a few years back. And yes...you absolutely CAN say "where are his friends/family?" Someone who is not in the right frame of mind isn't really thinking about helping themselves. You have to be there for them through thick and thin.

I just hope someone catches wind of these pics who's close to Delonte and can give him some guidance to help him get on the path to recovery. You have to remember...he's not only battling a mental illness, but he's also apparently developed a drug addiction.

Curry never said he was a schizo lol.

He meant that it would take something of that brevity, akin to Magic stating that he had HIV, for America to even begin taking mental health more serious instead of casting it off as a crutch

One of my cousins is bipolar. One day he can be the nicest person in the world, the next moment as soon as things don't go his way, boom, violent outbursts like hitting and cutting himself, and the next thing we find out.. he's on the streets and by the weekend locked up in a mental ward high on whatever drugs. I remember going to that Gateways hospital in LA to visit and he was in his room talking to himself in the closet. |I So yeah mental disease isn't a new thing to me but like I said.. you can't feel sorry for em, plenty of my family have extended their homes to him, including bailing him out, money for food/drugs/drank, or whatever but he destroyed all those relationships. Ultimately, you accept them for who they are, and it's up to them to find the help to control their issues.

So you acknowledge that mental illness is very real and not new to you by describing situations with your cousin. But you follow it up with "you can't feel sorry for em"?

What kind of backwards, a-hole thinking is this? You can (and should) absolutely feel bad and have sympathy for folks suffering from mental illnesses. You act like your cousin is of sound mind to make the same rational decisions that you or I know that he should. That isn't how this stuff works, and that's kinda the whole problem with the situation.

Choosing not to get involved with the ups and downs of a mentally ill person's life is one thing, and understandable. But saying you can't feel bad for them? Get the entire **** outta here with that type of thinking.

I don't feel sorry for him and that's for his own benefit. Do I have empathy? Sure but that's not going to help him. The more you provide, care and support them unconditionally, the more they rely on you,and continue on that dependence. They continue thinking that they will be forgiven so why do I need to change? The only way to get them out of that mentality is to show to them that they are strong, independent, person who happens to be diagnosed with a mental illness. You try not to treat em different and sometimes it's easy to blame mental illness but sometimes it's just their own addictive personality that got them to where their at.

the worst thing is that when people have mental disorders, drugs are usually what people use to fix these problems.

whether its legal drugs prescribed from a physician or illegal drugs, they never heal the person and often make them worse.

this seems to be the case here where delonte has a mental illness where at one point he could cope with it but drugs seemed to have worsened his condition.
