If you don't qualify for Financial Aid, join the military & they'll pay for your school while you're in OR after you get out. Tired of dudes making excuses for this crap in 2012

Everyone outside those of wealth qualify for some sort of Financial Aid, be it loans or grants BUT the government doesn't care.

In Dallas, the 3 of the most populate black high school combined into one and some student were inconveniently located to another schools. While the mostly white schools build 70 million dollar football stadiums and study areas. To not see the obvious difference of education and tax payers funding to black communities is foolish. Look up the number of predominately minority schools compare to those mostly white. Its very clear that minorities have to more obstacles in their path then their counterparts (poor or rich).

stole the land from Native Americans (raped & pillaged their homes, gave them indian reservations/casinos in return), enslaved blacks for 400 years to pick cotton on their plantations, made the Chinese build the railroads (naturalization was withheld from them; many were deported intentionally after the railroads were built), & now they pay illegal Mexicans dirt cheap under the table (way less than a normal construction worker would get) to build houses for their suburbs.

I guess at the end of the day people are more concerned about how others view them instead of trying to actually be responsible for enacting the changes in the first place.

The only people who I will allow to embarrass me will be people I'm close friends with, people i'm dating, or family.

Otherwise, try as you may but I refuse to acknowledge any association to someone who I bear no relation to on the grounds that you want to pin that on me.

White people are going to judge me regardless so why make it easier for them by accepting that claim?

You're black. In this country you're automatically judged, viewed, and treated by the way they view the majority of black men.

I'm Latino and I don't like being thrown into the "immigrant", "wife beater", "drunk" mix but when people ask what I am and I say, "mexican", the next statement is, "do you drink?". When I tell them where I live, "thats the ghetto". Mind you I stay in a historic district with white folks but to them, it's the "ghetto".

All you can do is laugh it off. You're gonna change maybe a few peoples minds about you but looking at the bigger picture, you driving a coupe, will be met with 1 of 3 remarks. 1. Are you an athlete? 2. Are you a rapper? or 3. Must be a drug dealer.

Sad, but true.

The point is that I AM DOING WELL. Who cares what the world thinks?

I've learned to look beyond that burden. If you meet me then I'm the outlier. If you refuse to change your position then its no longer my responsibility.

This whole situation just makes me sad So many layers of problems/policies contribute to something like this developing.....truth be told there is no one "solution" you can only hope that younger generations don't fall into the same behaviors that are all around them in their environment, which is a majority of what they're exposed to. Maybe someone with a more positive message can reach the thousands of kids and the youth there and show them that there are other paths to prosperity and success and they don't have to be consumed by that lifestyle.

As cryptic as it may seem, I think some of these older adults and teens may be lost, but somebody has to reach out even if they aren't willing to listen initially, they're killing their own and although the jewelry, cars, and women may be nice in the interim in the long run they're doing their families and the community such a disservice and they may not even realize, or worse not even care . I guarantee you a good number of these guys who go down this path would be tremendously successful in other things if they applied themselves and their energy on that instead of gangbanging, they just need the opportunity....I hope this stuff dies down over the next decade there is literally no purpose for that type of violence at all

I've lived in Chicago for 8 years. It is an amazing city outside of a few bad neighborhoods. It's sad what goes on in those areas but I really do not see anything changing for the better anytime in the near future.

What about the tens of millions of immigrants who came to this country without speaking any type of English and still made something of themselves? I know for a fact that American's are a hell of a lot more racist towards Asian's and Arab's - but still for some reason Asian's have some of the highest percentage of people to go to college, still Arabs are buying land and owning business all throughout this country. They don't seem to be blaming the government.

That's just ridiculous to me. I'll continue with my theory tho, Parenting is the most important factor in the evolution of any human.

Point blank, if you're making a personal effort to better the situation of our young men in this country then props to you. That other **** about hanging with celebs, ****** mixtapes, and the F list celeb that you THINK you are is irrelevant. To make the statement that we're just making excuses, we don't wanna help ourselves that's why our situation isn't better is that defeatist uncle tom ******** no matter how you put it. Should we be held accountable for somewhat worsening our situation? Yes. Absolutely the truth, I'd even broaden it and just say mentoring and guidance by SOMEONE with a positive influence can have a tremendous impact on any young mind

You made some excellent points, but education isn't the only answer. Parenting is almost as big of a factor in this as education, you can take a child from the hood and try to give him an education or vocational skills but the mentality that the child absorbs daily will more than likely dictate how that child acts. We need accountable parents teaching their children that education is how you're going to better your situation. I don't know how it will be done, but it starts at home period.
I'm actually back and forth about whether or not I want to become an educator in order to help our young men. From the experiences I've had working with them is an exasperating job but if we don't help our own then who will? I'm not trying to sit up in a nice neighborhood festering in smugness acting like I am not my people and that I don't owe them anything because "im different". I refuse.

As far as I am concerned, the parents need to be educated as well.

Personally, I think that America needs to rethink the education system as a whole. Extending or re configuring the school class system and hours, in order to support the teachers, students, AND parents. I think that school should be viewed in the same manner as work, so that the parents can be home when the kids are home, then being able to lend their support where needed.
