I'm not hood but I've been in some hood !%* situations...so with that said

1.) Stay away from the flashy people...they bring trouble.
2.) If you gonna be one way with one person be that way with everybody. The only people that should get a pass if you plan to give one should be the old folksand the babies out of respect.

- Be blissfully ignorant.
- Make sure staying fresh is one of your top priorities. Even if you can't really afford the things you're buying. (You have to buy a pair a Pradas,some True Religions, and an Ed Hardy shirt, even if you live in the projects.)
- Crime = Cool.
- Cops are always bad and unfair, even if you really committed a crime.

I'm not from the hood but Ive been there enough. Keep your eyes open, dont be a hot boy and don't underestimate ANYBODY...dudes on the block, the oldman that lives one floor up etc.

living in the hood... you must never let neighbors or anyone disrespect or take advantage of you cause they will continue to do it. Don't walk around meanmugging cause dudes will test you. However, don't walk around looking scared. Don't be naive or stupid, going to the parties where dudes get shot orshot at everytime.
The best combination is street smarts and book smart.

Here's a few:

Never stand for disrespect
Don't be scared to take a hit
Condoms (cats on the block still don't get this)
How to stretch a dollar
There's a thin line between keeping your head up and eyes open and just looking plain nervous
Always look people that you're interacting with (rather positive/negative) in the face (one sense of fear and you're done)
There's no such thing as squashed beef

But you shouldn't have to be from off the block to have these things embedded in you. (Most is common sense)
At the same time, not to sound stereotypical, but a lot of people that aren't from this type of setting seem way more oblivious to the world in general.
Doesn't apply to everyone though.

This is kinda off topic, but when I was in second grade, someone broke into my teacher's crib and robbed her - then drowned her in her own bad tub.

Nobody at school knew what happened to her till like 2-3 weeks after her death. Crazy shi... goes down in the project.

Oh and for the kids on the outside looking in, getting shot/shot at (frequently) does not make you a gangsta/hood/thug. It just means people want to kill you.Plain and simple.

moved out the hood when i was 12, so i cant relate too much...but it made me a light sleeper for one, due to a yearlong series of late night brawls and breakins/robberies in my neighborhood, and i can identify when dudes are tryna test you even when the tone of their voice sounds normal and calm. not look nervousat all, even if theres 4-5 goons posted up ahead of you, and you can tell theyre staring you down, just keep walking straight without looking down or changingyour pace...all that @#$%
