Ppl do this all the time with DC too thats how the whole "DMV" thing started in IMO
MY man who is from MD said to someone when we were in Miami "I'm from DC"
and he told me it's much easier to say to someone
I guess everyone wants someone to think they're from a "Big City" but me personally I don't care

This happens alot to me when I'm at school. Convo's go like this:
Random person: What's up, where you from?
Me: Philly, you?
RP: Me too! What part?
Me: South Philly.
RP: Ohhhh, so you're actually from Philly. I'm from < insert random burb of Philly here >.

i only say im from NY only when im out of the country. And even then I say Brooklyn. No one is actually from the city, only temporary tenants dwell there.

actually, if you read your post again, it def sounds like you were implying that NYers not from the city was a bad thing. Everybody understands you are not from NY, when u said "don't you dare try to claim NY and be from upstate" is where it sounds like you're saying, "Don't say you are from NY if you are not from the actual city." ......its part of the reason i cant stand NYers. from the different places ive lived, and wide range of individuals ive worked with over the years....especially in the military where you get probably the most diverse mix. NYposers are BY FAR the biggest posers i have ever come in contact with in my life.

NOT CHICAGO. but sure enough, to those not from Illinois Chicago takes up the whole state. so even when you try to explain you're not from Chicago and that your city is actually closer to St. Louis than the Chi, it doesnt matter, you're still from Chicago. i mean, it'd be just as easy to just go ahead and claim the Chi....but why?? i wish the lames ive met from NY would have followed suit.

Some people say they're from a city to help others get an idea of where they're from, others say it just to pretend.
People from "philly" are usually from the main line, south jersey (the worst), or bucks county or something.
DC usually = DMV
Let me tell you though, the easiest way to know someone's NYC history (not always fool proof, but...) is by their phone number. I still have my old cell phone # ported to my current provider even though I don't use it, its a 212 area code cell phone number. 646 is like the "old" ac now and everyone is 917 or whatever else is new. 347 is sort of old but 718 is much older, however there are way less 212s than 718s.
You also have the "bridge and tunnel crowd". These are people from jersey, westchester, and long island. They know the landmarks and all the stupid trivia because they visit the city all the time, and at one point maybe their families even lived in the city. Some rep jersey hardcore and dislike new yorkers to a degree (usually reciprocating disdain they get from jersey hating nyers), some pretend like they're from the city.
Is staten island still recognized by new yorkers as a legitimate borough? My only friend from their calls it "staten island aka the dump", lol.

i'm guessing this is common tho for those who live close by a big city because i met some girl this summer when i was in ny at a bar n she kept talkin bout the city this and the city that and when it was time for us to go to her house to have sexual intercourse the damn batch lived up in nyack
