Is Social Media Destroying Society? Former Facebook Exec Says 'Yes'

i recently gave away my apple watch for this reason. it gave me less and less of choice about checking notifications and what was happening on the internet and in text messages. i feel too connected. at least with my phone i can put it down and not check it. the watch was too easy to stay connected
Was actually thinking about getting my first smartwatch but been holding off because I don't want another device that I have to charge

I also sold my ultra to a friend. I’m pretty busy and between work and personal all day and night the damn thing buzzing. pics, etc etc. It was annoying. I have work apple watches the past 4 years.

Ya man. Got rid of mine too. The only way I could see it being useful to me is if I was really into fitness.

From time to time I like to check my heart rate and blood oxygen so I bought a $30 oximeter.

Haven't gotten my hands on this yet but it's on my radar. Figured y'all in this thread might be interested too.

If you read the book, you should also listen to this interview he does with Tyler Cowan.

I agree that social media is pretty terrible for kids, but Haidt isn’t particularly coherent in his philosophy or ideas for how to fix the issue, imo.

I never did Twitter/X but I imagine it works like everything else, right? I gives suggestions based off what you look at?

This ain’t true at all.

Just like Facebook and IG.

I don’t follow any sex workers on FB or IG. I don’t follow vixens or models on IG….

Yet my IG explorer page be full of women bootyshaking or taking scantily clad photos.

I literally follow dog pages, art, muscle cars and sports. It’s aggravating as hell

That's not how it works at all. That's a general idea that they've pushed, but these companies are sneaky. Especially in the U.S. Someone could hashtag a picture of a dog as #redfastcar, and it would appear in a users (who strictly follows car pages) feed.

Exactly. Just how these phone companies swear that they don’t share your phone numbers or personal information.

They make too much money from advertising and predatory marketing. This narrative that you create your own personal algorithm is false. These companies are here to make money. That’s the bottom line.

If T-Mobile or Elon musk wants you to be aware of something, they’re going to force it on you one way or another:lol:lol

That sounds more like people exploiting a loop hole than a megacorp conspiracy.

It’s the comments that’s the problem.

It’s not even about what you follow, but on all kinds of posts , you peep the comments and there be all kinds of wild stuff that has nothing to do with the tweet. It’s gotten a bit better but it was really bad for a bit lol

That’s his point but the companies do it to. And they allow it so, they’re definitely not trying to correct it.

You also have to remember that users who pay for their ads or page to be seen bypass the necessary channels as well.

For instance, I can search for a 1980-1986 cutlass supreme on Facebook market with a maximum price of $6000.

But Facebook will also have “sponsored” advertisements of cars that I didn’t put in my filtered list.

They’ll mix in a 2023 Corvette or a 1997 c-class Benz because the person who listed those ads paid for their ad to be boosted

It does, but it makes no sense for you to be looking at a tweet about Lebron bricked a wide open shot and the first reply in the thread being a dirty looking chick putting a dildo in her butt. There’s also far too many bots that’ll instantly like your tweets as soon as you post. Elon has destroyed twitter. Racists get enabled but if you respond to those racists your account could be locked or you’ll get a warning.

Elon is terrible but Twitter was bad before he bought it. I can’t let you do that, and I don’t even care for dude.

They sold it to him for that very reason. It was going down hill so, sell it to him for billions and let it be his problem.

Twitter been a rancid cesspool since at least 2014/2015.

That place been hamsterdam/debauchery laden for a WHILE

In my personal experience, my Twitter feed doesn't show me any soft/hard-core porn stuff AT ALL. Not discounting anyone else's experience but I don't look that stuff up and don't see that stuff on my feed.

Edit: But I see people aren't discussing personal timeliness but what they see in the REPLIES of posts.

Ok, I understand now.
