Tennessee Titans football star Kenny Britt was arrested in Hoboken yesterday, only one day after he pleaded guilty to careless driving in his hometown of Bayonne, officials said.
Britt, now of Brentwood, Tenn., was arrested last night at Willow Avenue and 15th Street by Hoboken narcotics officers and charged with two counts of resisting arrest, official said today.
Britt was issued a summons and ordered to appear on the charges at 1 p.m. on June 16 in Central Judicial Processing Court in Jersey City, according to court papers.
The complaint says Britt "did purposely prevent or attempt to prevent a public servant from lawfully performing an official function by means of force or violence, specifically by refusing to open your hand when ordered to do so then pulling your hand away."
It goes on to say Britt is charged with using his body "to push away from the officers" and pulled away his arm "while not allowing the officers to handcuff" him.
One count is a disorderly persons offense but the second is a third-degree crime, which carries a possible sentence of 3 to 5 years in prison upon conviction.
Hoboken police have refused to release any information on the charges against Britt, and would not even confirm he was charged.
On Tuesday the former Bayonne High School star pleaded guilty to careless driving regarding an incident in April that involved a chase.
Britt was fined $478 and four points will be transferred to his driver's license, according to Britt's lawyer. Britt did not appear in court and must sign an affidavit to finalize the plea. All other charges -- including hindering apprehension and obstructing governmental function -- were dropped.
According to police reports, authorities clocked Britt's blue Porsche going 71 miles per hour in a 50 mile per hour zone on April 12. When officers began pursuing Britt, they say, he began swerving in and out of traffic, and exited near the public housing complex where he grew up. Police said when they caught up to Britt he was walking away the car and originally denied ownership.
Britt was arrested in January 2010 after failing to pay $865 for three outstanding traffic warrants. He had been facing a theft-by-deception charge for not paying bail money he had pledged for a friend, but that $12,500 payment was made earlier this year.
Last October, Britt was involved in a bar room fight at a Nashville club, but was not charged. Last August in Nashville, he received a misdemeanor citation for driving on a revoked license.
Britt's attorney could not immediately be reached for comment today.
