Mayweather calls out Pacquiao. May 5th. Official?

yea I remember that article and the business model is genius....what I don't understand is why move away from it? on the biggest fight in recent boxing history?

does he think he can make more from someone upfront and then let them handle the rest of the legwork?

I dont know, which is why this has me confused somewhat. Perhaps when he is in full control of the fight he reaps 100% of those benefits. With a co-promotion, maybe Arum's hands get on some of that $$$ so he would rather see a majority of his dough up front and split a smaller piece of the pie on the back end.

If they're doing a 50/50 split, I'm going to assume he wants a piece of Floyd's pot which is ridiculous. That's why he's always said that it would have to be a split in favor of Manny. I don't think he wants to co-promote either, they came close to burying the hatchett last year but I doubt Arum wants to put money is GB's pocket.

Because Mayweather has averaged about 1.5 million pay-per-view buys in his last four fights
If 1.4 million or 1.5 million fans buy the fight — which is expected
If May is gettin 1.5 buyers for a  fight with 4 "other" dudes, why would they expect a similar number against THEE marquee fight the world wants to see?  That doesn't make sense to me.

If this actually got sealed, and the buzz hits, I would think there would be a pretty large spike in the amount of pay per views for this fight, don't you think?

Don't think he's done anything past 1.5 since De La Hoya

Mayweather received a major bump in popularity following the De La Hoya bout. His September 2009 victory over Juan Manuel Marquez generated 1.06 million in PPV buys, and his December 2007 victory over Ricky Hatton had 920,000 buys. Four of his bouts rank among the top-10 nonheavyweight PPV fights of all time.

I have no doubt it'd hit at least 3 million.

This bout would easily surpass 1.5 mill PPV buys.

Floyd is his own promoter per se, although he hires a promoter (usually Golden Boy) on a per fight basis. He gets a percentage of all the action (ticket sales, merchandise, PPV, etc) whereas someone like Manny with the traditional promoter-boxer arrangement, gets a set amount based on the fight, and the promoter receiving the rest.

There is always a risk for the promoter in case the fight doesn't sell like it should, but there is MINIMAL risk when you're considering someone of the caliber of Floyd and Manny.

To explain the business model, Schaeffer starts with a pie. A little more than half goes to the distributors (Time Warner, DirecTV, etc.). The balance goes to the network, HBO or Showtime, which takes its distribution fees and hands the rest to the promoters.

In this case, Golden Boy has one contract with HBO and another with Mayweather Promotions. But the money, less what distributors and networks take, is under Mayweather’s control; normally the promoter would control it.

That pie is only part of the total revenue, the pay-per-view TV part. To illustrate the other revenue streams, Schaefer pulled a piece of paper from his pocket, a spreadsheet written in 6-point typeface. Drawn out, Schaefer said it would take up two chalkboards, but on the sheet in his pocket, it was boiled down to a formula for how much Mayweather would earn, based on how many people bought the fight and what the other revenue streams brought in.

Those streams include foreign sales for a fight broadcast in 168 territories; closed-circuit revenues (in 2,000 or so bars and restaurants nationwide, in theaters and in rooms at Las Vegas casinos); site revenue (ticket sales, merchandise); and sponsorships. Most boxers would see little, if any, of that money, whereas, Schaefer said: “All revenues here are Mayweather revenues. He gets part of everything.

That's why you hear Arum talking about the 45,000 people venue and all that and not Pac and his people. Pac isn't seeing any of that money, he gets a flat rate regardless, that's all Bob Arum's money

. Mayweather is getting bread off of ticket sales, pay per view buys, concessions, foreign streams, showings in bars and theaters, we're talking SERIOUS $$$

That's where the issue comes up.  Manny wants to have a huge upfront guarantee because he's not getting that extra money.  Arum doesn't want to give him a $50mm guarantee.

Arum basically suggesting that with the new arena and an extra 20,000 seats that it will generate $40,000,000 in extra revenue.  I don't see how that's possible given that most of those will be the equivalent of bleacher seats.

I'm a fan of both... But if Pac beats Mayweather alot of NTers will be butthurt.

Mayweather is like that dude on Xbox Live or PSN with the ridiculous record in Madden but only built that @@#% by playing bums. The moment someone with the same record or better steps to him he backs out immediately with BS excuses. Just sayin...
