The typical answer would be supply and demand along with the fact that you just can't purchase them anywhere nor can you buy one without an AT&T contract attached to it.  Throw in all those factors and that's why it's so expensive.  I paid $600 for mine a couple of months ago.

got $400 to spend.. but the 3GS iphones are topping out at that much on craiglist and ebay.
hell im seeing ppl sell their 3G iphones for upwards to 175-230

You can get an iphone 3g or 3gs for that price.

dang man I jus had someone leave their 3gs in my store over the weekend I thought bout keeping it for a spare ipod but instead just returned it to the owner (i've lost my phone too many times so I know how it is).... Should've sold it tho I'm salt
