I second the use of solid color seamless roll paper just because the wrinkles/creases fabric backdrops are annoying and no amount of ironing seems to get them out for me. I only truly use fabric when shooting still life because of the different print options.
I was trying out "gels" a few weeks ago. I went to the local craft store and bought a few rolls of color cellophane. They're pretty useful as cheap gels since each roll was like 2 dollars or less.
So much this! I have the alien bees, external battery(non vagabond), and a few modifiers like parabolic umbrella and octobox.
I've wasted so much money with cheap little continuous lighting setups off Amazon. I wish I would've waited to invest in just some nice inexpensive, yet reliable...
