AUBURN, Wash. - A prank at an Auburn high school leads to two seniors banned from Saturday's graduation ceremony, as well as another student arrested, accused of assaulting a school security guard.

"If I did offend anybody, then I apologize," said Andrew Carel, 18.

An apology may not be enough to let Carel and his friend Kyle off the hook after the prank they pulled Friday morning at Auburn-Riverside High School.

"We bought the bananas," Carel said, "got about 3 feet of fishing line, and the tied them up on the balcony."

And why string up bananas in that particular location? Carel said students it's because of the nickname that stairwell has received for the black students who gather there.

"They all hang out under the stairs," he said, "and we just call it "The Jungle" because... that's what even the black people call it too."

Carel, who is white, said the prank was meant to be a humorous exchange between friends of both races who routinely crack off-color jokes at each other. Carel said he was not the one who thought up the prank, but was one of the two students who put it into action.

Several of his friends said they believe administrators went too far to suspend them, and have even painted variations of "Let Kyle and Andrew Walk" on their vehicles.

"It wasn't meant to hurt people," said one girl, who asked to remain nameless. "I look at Andrew, and he worked his butt off to be able walk for his family, and to take that away is harsh."

"It didn't seem like too big a deal, because everyone seemed to take it as a joke," Carel said.

But not everyone was amused.

"Stuff like that with the bananas and everything, I don't think it's cool," said Teryn Henrichs, a freshman. "It's just messed up."

Teryn said he wasn't the only one upset by the display, which hung prominently just inside the school's main entrance.

"I see a... crowd of people," he said, "and I see the black people over here and the white section over here, and they're going back and forth, like mad... flipping each other off."

Auburn Police said that's when a school security guard attempted to quell the tension by escorting one of the black students to the office.

Police said when the security guard, who is not a police department school resource officer, placed his hand on the student's back to guide the student, the student allegedly assaulted the guard.

Officers were called and arrested the student for assault.

Video won't embed for some reason...

This #%+% is ridiculous...

Wow, over sensitive ppl for the loss. You really that offended by a banana? If that was me i'd lmao and try to jump and get one of those bananas.

Judging by his tone, the guy doesn't sound remorseful at all. Pretty messed up though.

Nah the article left out some things.

What it didnt say was there was also a giant sign that had "MONKEYS" in giant letters. But that didnt even start the confrontation...

The fight started when the white kids were waving around the bananas making monkey sounds at the black kids, not the hanging of the bananas...

If you don't get in someone's face after some $$!% like that, then there's something wrong with you.

nvrmind then, but still getting mad/violent about it doesn't solve a damn thing

Sometimes I feel like people refuse to use their brains. Maybe its part of being young a rebellious. I understand making off color jokes to your friends. Key word: friends. I have friends of all race/color/ethnic groups and we all joke with each other now and again. We are friends and won't think anything more of a joke because we know there are no hateful/racist intentions behind it. The problem comes when you start doing things like this in public, to people you don't know, and who don't know you. How are you supposed to know how they will react to those same jokes? I just hate seeing things like this happen. Why cant we all just get along!

Kid is young and careless.  I doubt he's racist, but he's stupid for thinking people wouldn't react to it.
Plus, it's Western Washington, this %%*# didn't happen down south.

When will it stop!? It's time we start seeing each other as human beings, not as a color.

That prank sucked.
Out of all the students, a black one gets arrested for assault.

it's not like apologies mean anything anyway. you can do anything you want if you just apologize after right?

that woman in the video is ******ed...

"my children are black and i wouldn't allow them to use that kind of language" ok woman.. you're in for a surprise. i'm sure your kids go around saying the N word all the time. it's the cool thing to do now a days...

but anyways, the prank was racist and uncalled for, however... the black students are to blame for this as well... sorry. they encouraged this behaviour by allowing people to continue calling the area 'the jungle'

I was thinking this too, judging by his tone I don't think he's racist I just think he's insensitive.
